Did that... I called 4 companies only one gave me an actual dollar figures. The others all want to know what my insurance will pay first. I'm considering going with the one who gave the price but I want to know if $5,000 is a generally good price for what I need/want.

$5,000 is a good ballpark for that size for a complete roof, assuming you don't have a lot of weird dormers and/or flashing that needs done.
Also, did they say anything about repairs? Does it include drip-edging? Sometimes they'll try to get you on the repairs.

Kemp Allen Dale Roofing did a fine job for me at a great price and quoted really cheap repair terms up front if they ran into any problems, which fortunately they didn't.

However, don't call them if you're in a hurry. Took them several weeks to fit me in the schedule.

There are a ton of variables at play here. Is there easy access around your house? How many layers of shingles are on the roof currently? What type of deck do you have? Do you have any chimneys that require flashing? Do you have any soft spots that you know will required wood replacement? How are you gutters? If it is a tear off can the shingles easily be moved in and out. Is it so steep that you will require roof jacks or can it be walked? Can the shingles be stored on the roof or will they need to come up a bundle at a time. All of these factors contribute to the price of your roof. You need to provide more information.

That's what I said.

Yes easy access around the house. One layer of 3 tab shingles that need to come off. No chimney, and should be no wood replacement. Gutters are good and the roof can be walked on with no jacks. I'm sure the shingles can be stored on the roof and a dumpster can go in my driveway for the old shingles to be removed. Does that help? So far out of five companies only Arrow has been professional enough to give me a quote of $5000 without mentioning insurance. For this reason I'm apt to go with them I just want to know if this is a good price or of I can get it much cheaper??? I have no other quote to go on!!

I think it depends on the kind of house you have. If you have a newer house, or if you have an expensive house, I would probably get a better contractor. My house is a split level that is close to 50 years old and about mid-range in price so I didn't think twice about hiring Mexicans. I bought the shingles, 10 Mexicans came over and had it done the same day. My neighbor was quoted $6000 from Able, I got mine done for about $2000 including the cost of the shingles. it's not a perfect job, but it's good enough ... six years and it hasn't leaked.

Are the following anything special I will get from a bigger company or is this something any very small company will do: Install ice guards in valleys and along eaves. Install 15 lbs felt underlayment. Install 1 4" soil stack flashing kit. Install closed shingle valley. Stepflash 32 ft of wall. Counterflash 7 ft of wall. GAF Timberline HD dimensional shingles with 6 nails each.

No all of it is standard. The way should have both step flashing and counter flashing. Only doing step flashing is not smart. You need some type of vent system.

A good small company can do all that. You will find very good companies both large and small.

Why am I not surprised that you hired Mexicans to do labor for you. The next time you start to rant about America going in the crapper, just remember, you helped with the flushing.

We've never seen a black roofer. Do they exist?

I don't know. Out of curiosity I went to blackpages.com and typed in 'roofing' and it said there were no results.
