John Lyon aka Southside Johnny has more talent than Bruce or George combined. I've always wondered why he didn't quite "make it".
You're so right, Rowdydoo. And Bob Segar was sooooo much better then Bruce. Still enjoying 'Sunspot':-)

Don't get me wrong, Bruce Springstein is a fine artist in his own right but, Roy Orbison and all of the other great performers don't need him on stage with them. He's tainting a lot of once in a lifetime performances. His yelling off key style is not needed. Bring out the hook and get him off stage.
Um...Roy Orbison doesn't need him on the stage with him because Roy Orbison is DEAD, has been since 1988...

But other than that, yes, Orbison was a wicked good performer. As was one of this year's best inductees, Linda Ronstadt. Too bad she can't perform any longer due to Parkinson's.

When Springstein was starting out he used to come to a nightclub in DE, the Stone Balloon. George Thoroughgood was a local guy and he came around a lot too. But George had already cut 'Bad to the Bone.'(the owner of the Balloon was Jill Biden's first husband.)
Neither had the talent, voice or band that another local guy, Johnny Neel had. But both were obnoxious and quite taken with themselves. The world owed them. Like you say, all Springstein did was scream his lyrics and he had some bad habits on the side.
Thoroughgood is probably broke except from royalties from that one song. At one jam session on a Saturday afternoon, when George came off the stage a girl said to him,'come back when you can't stay so long, George.'
Johnny Neel, blind since birth, went to Nashville and had semi-success as a writer and keyboards. He wasn't all about the celebrity, but the music anyway. He was nominated for am Emmy when he played keys with the Alllman brothers.
I never got why Springstein 'made it.' He was not talented.
Fascinating review Annie.

I'll be looking for your next one in the Rolling Stone.

Fair chance that any Southside Johnny song you like was written by the Boss.

Yep, Johnny sang many songs written by Bruce. However, he has "the voice" that Bruce does not.

You know, that brings another one to mind that is better than Bruce and under-rated. Boz Skaggs was the same time period, right?(I'm not sure if I spelled his name right) Ahh, Lido, Harbor Lights, Love, look what you've done to me.

In my case, "Catman, Look what you've done to me" LOL Gotta love Dave.

Look what up?

The fact that you think Bruce Springsteen has no talent?

You told us that. I said that's fascinating.

Scaggs is excellent blues and jazz. Last I heard, he was working with Donald Fagan of Steely Dan, another musical wonder. Love Steely Dan music.

No I'm not, and no he didn't, Johnson. You're taking it out of the context of all his and ru's other personal posts at, not to, me (like I care).

"Looking forward to your next one in Rolling Stone" is not meant to be a compliment. He' was insinuating that I was lying. To what end is beyond me.

I saw that when I was listening to a few of his songs on youtube last night. Then I dug into my sister's CD's and found 'Silk Degrees.' I always liked Steely Dan.

One night at the Stone Balloon Stevenson got up on stage and said "And this weekend we have none other than the Boss!" Springsteen was not nationally know then and I thought he meant Boz Scaggs was going to be there!" I still get razzed over that.

He wasn't insinuating you were lying. He was insinuating you have a poor ability to assess the quality of music.

Of course you do since the band is named after a dee-eye-el-dee-oh that was featured in the novel "Naked Lunch" by William Burroughs.
