You're thinking of survivor benefits.
SSI is for people who cannot work because of a (supposedly bonafide) disability and who didn't have enough quarters to get Social Security Disability; or for children who, if they were adults could not work because of their disability and whose parents are below some level of income (I believe it is twice the federal poverty level) and have less than a certain level of salable assets (I think its the same as the bankruptcy exclusion). There are just over 5 million people getting SSI. These people can qualify for other benefits, such as food stamps, medicaid, housing subsidies, etc, depending on family situation, income of others in household, etc. Nothing wrong with the program's intent, but it is, unfortunately, sometimes abused.
If a person/family is so poor that they "qualify" for SSI, then how are they "abusing" something that they obviously need??? I've known people who were on SSI in the past. A lady in a wheel chair , one leg, and 45% blind,230lbs. who had a mentality disabled 43 year old son who pushed her chair for her. Republicans plan would kick them off the program or cut it drastically. They would demand that these people need jobs and they're moochers. The 47% who Romney has no empathy for. God will destroy this nation and it won't be because of "moochers". It will be because of the callousness of people who have more wealth than they or their heirs could spend in a 100 years.

Ahhh, the wonders of raw capitalism!! Jacking up the rent on people who can barely pay it before the hike. In a system like that, there will as always be losers.

So you're agreeing that they are living above their means and buying wants when they cannot provide for their own needs? You're making progress.

You're not that naive... A disability is required. These are sometimes faked. Some people also work "under the table" and are thus able to lie about their true income.

Do you have proof of this, because I've heard of no one trying to cut SSI for people who genuinely qualify.

Not if you're on SSI.
SSI eligibility requires proof of a disability--generally defined by an inability to carry out prescribed number of Activities of Daily Living. This often precludes the ability to work.

You are confusing SSI with Social Security, an earned benefit.

Of course Doc! I know how some live but I don't think the kids should suffer because the parent/s are ignorant and foolish. Democrats are not blind to the stupidity of some poor people, c'mon now.

I'd say that depends...LOL.

http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2012/09/28/man-...

A man who prosecutors say collected Social Security disability benefits while working for the agency has been convicted of fraud.

Christopher George Perry, 50, of Baltimore was convicted Thursday of Social Security disability fraud, federal health benefit program fraud and health care fraud. He faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing Jan. 3.

According to evidence presented at trial, Perry began receiving Social Security long-term disability benefits in 1996. He also received Medicare benefits as a result of his disability and a low-income subsidy for prescription drugs.

Prosecutors say Perry went back to work in 1996 and in 2007, got a job as benefits authorizer with SSA, where he worked on cases pertaining to long-term disability benefits.

Prosecutors say Perry was overpaid more than $150,000 in benefits.

And I've evaluated plenty of folks on SSI that has nothing wrong with them. They doctor shopped until they got the right mix of ICD-9 codes and then they hired a lawyer to fight their case. When you aren't paying the bills and it's free money you could win you don't care if some lawyer takes a huge chunk of your check each month.

Sorry I've seen it many times.

When you applied for a mortgage loan did you have the FULL amount of the cost of that property at the time of signing? Everyone who doesn't have cash money flow uses credit, and if a job is lost or a serious health issue arise, the house may be foreclosed. Who wins? The wealthy will get their money in the end.

Don't worry about their taxes. Obama wants to keep 98% of Bush's tax cuts. For the 98% of Americans!

Yesterday I reposted EXACTLY what I said so that LaToya can see.

The only history to be aware of is one of extreme over-reaction, coupled with a willingness to condemn anyone who doesn't jump on certain bandwagons--such as blanket rejection of anything attributed to the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. And this rejection is not based on any thoughtful consideration of the man, his religion or his life and actions--but rather a political smear campaign that was aimed at Barack Obama.

And some politicians receive envelopes full of Hundreds from lobbyist! Some people, like Trump, file bankruptcy over and over and get bank loans a few years later! That's our system man! And until you die and go to Heaven, you're always going to be in a corrupt and fallen world. Get yours and keep it moving. There never was or ever will be a perfect, honest, non-corrupt America!

Then they are bad parents and are not capable of raising a child. Instead of fixing the problem at the root we give them more money to have more kids to be bad parents to. They should have their children taken away and be sterilized. Democrats aren't blind to the stupidity of poor people, in fact they depend on it to stay in their seats.
