“Where did I put my tiara?”

By falling in line with other states, California is abandoning its push for all eighth-graders to take algebra.

Last month, the State Board of Education unanimously shifted away from a 15-year policy of expecting eighth-graders to take Algebra I. The state will allow them to take either Algebra I or an alternate course that includes some algebra. New state standardized tests will focus on the alternate course -- the same one adopted by most states under the Common Core curriculum being rolled out across the nation.

Supporters welcome the change as more in line with current practice, of schools offering two tracks of math for eighth-graders. But critics fear that the new standard will let schools avoid offering rigorous courses for all. They point to a report released last week showing that some schools are not placing black and Latino students in advanced math courses even when they're prepared.

The change is controversial because success in Algebra I is the single best predictor of college graduation.

Supporters say the state has adopted a more practical and effective way of teaching math. The new standards recognize that not all students can pass algebra in middle school.

"You have a lot of kids who get pushed into algebra when they're not ready," said Mark Stolan, a math teacher at Quimby Oak Middle School in San Jose. "Not only do they struggle, which is demoralizing, then they end up having to take it again."

*sigh*
It should be mandatory from 5th grade on. Just like Spanish or Arabic or mandarin should be required from an early age in school.
Everything is becoming optional in this country when it comes to education. Then when someone made the wrong choices they are first to scream how unfair they have it and how the government needs to give them a better life. Quite sad.

I hope parents will pick what is best for their kids and have them take algebra and not just side step it.

What are the roots of this equation, and do your own work:

x^3-12x^2+47x-60 = 0

Since no one took up the last one, how about this one: Train A leaves Cincinnati for Columbus traveling an average of 42 miles per hour when moving. It stops once to let off 27 passengers and 37 get on. Train B leaves Columbus for Cincinnati averaging 35 miles per hour and stops twice, the first time taking on 15 passenger while letting 23 off, the taking on 45 passengers while letting off 17.

How much does it cost to expand Glitter's tiara to fit her big head?

The answer is BLUE. Unless it's a Monday which would be RED.

Spainish should not be taught in schools. If the invading trash will not speak english then cut out their tongues. Best way to teach a group of central American trash how to speak English shoot every third one and set ever second one on fire. The remaining will speak English with a West Virginia accent within seconds.

Correct, but the point was to get Glitter to do it.

She complains about the algebra standard but probably never uses it.

Unlike some of us.

As a Dietitian I use math every single day. Your challenge for me to solve an algebra problem, 20+ years since I have had class, is silly. The point I'm trying to make, it teaches critical thinking regardless of the career path you choose that is valuable.

Planning meals for the elderly in an assisted living home only requires the most basic math.

2 prunes for Mr. Jones and 3 prunes for Mr. Smith equals 5 prunes.

Mr. Jones was served 6 cubes of lime Jello but only ate 3 of them. Therefore Mr. Jones ate 50 percent of his lime Jello.

Posting a math problem as a challenge is asinine since someone needs only to enter the equation into a search engine (e.g. Google) to obtain the solution. They can also use any number of web sites such as www.mathway.com to obtain the answer.

It's no different than George of Hilliard aka Hugh Victor Thompson III cutting & pasting info while claiming to be the omnipotent master of all things topix.

Which is why I put the requirement "do your own work". Using a website is not doing your own work.

Guess you were out smoking during reading comprehension class.
