Another August of algae? It looks that way | The Columbus Dispatch

If recent history and a new algae advisory at Lake Hope in Vinton County are any indication, the state could be in for another August plagued by toxic algae. Full Story

oh come on... buckeye lake levels were so rediculously low, far below WHO standards for DRINKING WATER - i would have to guess the buckeye lake illness is more LAWSUIT related than ALGAE related

By the way, has anybody investigated harvesting the algae for something useful? If you can't get the surrounding landowners to act for the public good - then spend the money now being wasted on something that gets a return.

(Don't put Jim Jordan on the case. Algae will take over the surrounding landscape before he will get something done.)

Please be advised that the last time we saw algae at Grand Lake was one year ago. What was here last year did NOT cover the 13,000 acre lake, as the media loved to report. It would "bloom" and be pushed by the wind to one side or the other. We live onthe West side so most of the visible problem , and smell , went where the winds pushed it. That was last year.

This year, we crusie the lake and channels all of the time and have seen nothing.

One thing different this year is that we have had more wind which equals wave action. It's kind of like Jello, if we have wind and some wave action, it's doesn't form and "bloom." Our lake looks like any other lake. It's water. No smell, nothing showing. Chemical tests are wonderful things using modern technology BUT sometimes they get overused.

Get your facts. The WHO guideline for DRINKING water is 1.0 mg/l. I think you mean the WHO guidelines for contact (swimming, etc.) which is 20 mg/l for adults. And keep in mind, these warnings are just that - warnings, advisories, recommendations. You have to make a choice for yourself. The fact is, last year real people did get sick after exposure, at least one seriously, and several dogs died after exposure. It's not the state crying wolf. It's the state saying there may be a danger here, so be careful. As a citizen, that's all I ask - give me the facts and let me use that info to choose what is right for me and my family.

Dear Editor: You may want to revise your story. "2,900-acre Lake Hope"???

Lake Hope is quite small, maybe 100 to 200 acres in size. The whole park maybe that big with respect to many acres of beautiful adjacent forestland before it becomes the Zaleski State Forest, but overall, Lake Hope is quite small. You might want to check into this.

Another summer of Envirogay Peta lovers bashing farmers. Algae is natural, so shut up.
