STRONGSVILLE- Speaking to rally hundreds of supporters of the Strongsville teachers on strike since March 4, former Ohio governor Ted Strickland said the teachers are being disrespected.
"You have chosen to be a teacher, you have chosen to go to school and study hard and go into our classrooms and teach our children, and you are being disrespected at this time," Strickland said.
But exactly who is doing the disrespecting may not just be at the local level.
"You are facing what school systems and teachers and students across Ohio are facing," Strickland said. "That's a lack of responsibility of the part of our state's government to do what they should to educate our kids."
In the shadow of the city's distinctive clock tower, Strickland said the cuts in Gov. John Kasich's budget - to the tune of about $4.8 million less in 2012 for the Strongsville City Schools alone - are looming over local governments.
"The burden is being pushed ever more down to the local level, expecting local property tax owners to pick up the burden that should be carried by the state of Ohio," Strickland said. "The state has a responsibility to step up."
Strickland said the commitment to public education is something that needs to be shown from the state level down to every community.

Look how the substitute teachers were treated by striking union teachers recently. Small women were intimidated, abused with the F word and screamed at four inches from their faces. It is nearly impossible for a teacher in the State of Ohio to be fired and the only time they are fired is for having sex with students.

Ted Strickland and the teachers union are about as relevant today as a Zippo lighter. Their time has passed.
