I don't think the Schottensteins have traditional American values. Maybe it is because they are orthodox Jewish and maybe they're loyalty is with Israel. Anyway, they are actually opening their furniture stores ON THANKSGIVING DAY!! From 9am to midnight. They obviously don't care about their employees. There are rumors that they will force their employees to work on Christmas as well since they do not observe it.

You have 2 choices.

get paid double time or quit.

that is a decision, and not being forced.

Macys started this chain of events, of opening on Thanksgiving this year. Then other retailers, of course, followed.
Shopping is America's favorite pastime since malls and stores opened on Sundays, back in the 60's.

People working in retail are expected to work days, nights, holidays. If a person doesn't want to work accordingly to that, then get another job.

How did the board meeting go by the way?
Your roof finished in time for the cold weather!
Sure didn't take you long!

What the driving force is M O N E Y

No one is forcing people to work retail.
Employees who are in the business know they will have to work crazy hours, days, nights, weekends, holidays.
Retail is family friendly.
