A state Investigative Unit agent in Columbus has been fired after an off-duty road-rage incident in which he allegedly threatened to kill witnesses and roughly grabbed a woman by the arms.

Ronald T. Robinson, 44, of Gahanna, was fired on April 23 for conduct unbecoming an officer and making a false statement following an investigation by Ohio Department of Public Safety officials.

A separate investigation also concluded that Robinson twice showed sexually explicit cellphone videos to a co-worker while on duty.

Robinson denied the allegations and contested his dismissal from his $65,319-a-year job. The Investigative Unit, part of the public safety department, is composed of police officers who enforce state and federal laws concerning liquor, tobacco and food stamps.

Gahanna police concluded they had enough evidence to file criminal charges against Robinson after a road-rage incident on Dec. 16, but the others involved did not want to press charges, according to state records.

Robinson said he believed he was following a drunken driver when his personal vehicle was cut off in traffic and he tailed the driver to a nearby house.

Occupants of the vehicle claimed that Robinson followed them closely, flashing his vehicle’s headlights and honking the horn, and then blocked in their vehicle when they parked and confronted them.

An argument ensued in which Robinson said he was a police officer and reportedly grabbed a woman by the arms, bruising her, while threatening to kill those with whom he was arguing. Robinson, who is black, said he was taunted with a racial epithet and denied the allegations.

In the other case, an Investigative Unit agent told state investigators that Robinson twice showed him videos while on duty that his fellow agent claimed showed him having sex with a woman. Robinson said that he might have shared nude photos, but that they did not depict sexual activity.

Robinson could not be reached for comment.
