The problem is compounded by a flood of tradesmen laid off during the recession who have hung their own shingles but might know little about completing a project.

Don Zeis lost his home due to bankruptcy and foreclosure ... we got taken by him as well .... you reap what you sow ... he'll pay one day for his lack of integrity.

Alot of so called contractors are nothing but hack do it yourselfers.

First they fail by expanding their business so fast they feel the need to hire multiple crews of immigrants legal or not. Second they fail because their business probably expanded because of high productivity which means they were probably cutting corners to begin with.

Just like junkies they start doing the samething repetatively it becomes a habit and the truth or code in their case. They either teach or profess these habits to new hires and/or accept that same substandard work from sub contractors. The sub contractors; probably not much sharper the sham contractors begin to accept their employers lower standards as acceptable no matter who they work for.

It's a vicious cycle. Always ask up front WHO WILL be doing the work including the name of the sub contractor. We had alot of out of state contractors after early summer storms. Alot of illegals included which insulted many residents so contractors slapped a magnetic sign on leased trucks with names like "the Great American Roofing Company" with the same immigrant sub contractors.

WHO, WHAT and HOW much, that information should be included in writing.

What's the saying never buy a car made on Monday or Friday.

Or in this case leary of contract work being done in the cold of late fall/early winter. If nothing else those contractors didn't want to deal with the cold.

All I can say is watch a show like Holmes Inspection and you see that most contractors even in Canada do sub standard work. Even worse there are too many trades people period that cannot handle that kind of attention to detail at all. They look at someone who deals with the details on a daily basis as a fanatic, too slow or simply a pain in the butt because they know they're right and it will make them work harder or work the way they should all of the time.

I agree but unfortunetly there are still alot of licensed contractors out there with poor ethics, business practices and/or sub standard skill & practices.

Your chances are much better with licensed contractors but just like anything else those with a truely conscientious work ethic are rare. I know too many contractors that fail to update their skills, keep up on codes or even understand what or why they are doing something.

Yes, sometime the difficulties are in with the contractors for the construction issue.... so the proper selection of the contractors who are held to provide quality service is better....!

Beware of Angie's List, contractors pay to put their name on this list. Not saying that there are not good people on the list, but as always buyer beware. I'm an independent contractor, good at what I do and not on the "golden" list.

I know a contractor who's doing time in prison right now because a guy who's an OSU big shot, refused to give him his pay and kept making excuses.

The contractor went to his house and threatened him while taking things (electronics) to sell.
He was charged and convicted. The OSU guy is still living large and enjoying the sports room my guy built for him. The system didn't work for him because he couldn't afford to sue the guy in court...that's expensive.

A licensed contractor could have place a lien on the house.

http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/1311

A lien costs a very little to file and can be easily done by the contractor without a mouthpiece........
