Being not mechanically inclined is a very good reason to have your gas heating system inspected EVERY fall by a professional. Following this habit has led to my 30 year old gas furnace still working perfectly while other rusted hulks of the same model have been toted off to the junkyard. Nothing substitutes for preventive maintenance, especially on a combustion device. Do it every fall and ask them to inspect all gas piping too.
Oh, guy a few blocks away was fixing his own gas furnace and blew up the house. Luckily he was gone, looking for parts.

but all the money you spend on inspections could have gone to a new high efficiency furnace. with the money you would have saved on energy would have come out way ahead.

Actually, Bob, my furnace was one of the first generation high efficiency gas furnaces, replacing an old gas blower. I'm guessing it would cost about $3k or more to replace it now, whereas a $150 inspection each fall seems to preserved its functional life with an air conditioner tune up too.

Yeah, I guess I could have replaced it with the money spent on inspections over the years, but having the confidence that it has been safety inspected (as a combustion device) gives me peace of mind. Even a new furnace should have yearly inspection.

Thanks

Just make sure the air intake and exhuast gas are not blocked. Get a carbon monoxide detector or two.
