Termination cannot come soon enough for CCS Supt. Gene Harris and the incompetent "educators" she enables.
Educators carried on affair at middle school
by Jennifer Smith Richards
A Columbus principal trainee and a middle-school teacher carried on a love affair at school, sometimes using children to deliver notes back and forth so they could arrange time to meet and make out during the school day.
Meanwhile, another middle-school teacher is being fired in an unrelated incident that involved sexual contact between her students in class.
The Columbus school board took up both cases last night, beginning the process to fire Jeffrey L. Poulton, the principal trainee at Yorktown Middle School, on Livingston Avenue on the Far East Side.
The teacher Poulton was involved with, Anne E. Fulkert, will be suspended, then leave her job at the end of the school year.
During school, the two often used district email to write each other; sent text messages and handwritten notes on index cards; and had sexual contact while children were in the building.
Some notes that Poulton sent to Fulkert, a 29-year-old special-education teacher, detailed graphic sexual things that he wanted to do to her at school. Some were couriered by students.
“You are looking rather distracting again today. I better keep myself focused!” he wrote in one, and “I need some more tongue!” in another.
Neither could be reached last night.
Superintendent Gene Harris said she doesn’t think that children read the notes or saw the two engaged in sexual activity. Harris said that Fulkert, who is being suspended for 30 days without pay and agreed to resign at the end of the school year, likely will be teaching in a classroom until she leaves the district. Harris did not know where.
“This kind of behavior just will not be tolerated,” Harris said.“I think we dealt with it really squarely and fairly.”
In the second sex-related incident, Kathy D. Conner, a social-studies teacher at Southmoor Middle School on Moler Road, failed to notice when a girl performed oral sex on three boys during her sixth-grade class in late May.
Conner was showing a movie and didn’t see it occur, investigators’ records show, but when she later learned of it, she simply filled out a discipline form and put it in her assistant principal’s mailbox.
She did not call police or Franklin County Children Services, which is required by law, nor did she tell anyone in the South Side school building what had happened.
That incident, combined with another from 2009 in which Conner, 56, also did not report allegations of abuse of a sexual nature in her class, will result in her firing. In the 2009 incident, one boy placed his penis on another boy’s head. The second boy was asleep, something Conner’s supervisor noted that she frequently allowed in her class.
Conner is suspended without pay and will be notified that the district intends to fire her. She could not be reached.
