WASHINGTON -- Facing political attacks, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is leading an intense defense of the newly introduced immigration-overhaul bill with a flurry of public statements, a “Reform Facts” web page and a speech on the Senate floor.
“This is a reasonable way to deal with a real problem,” the Florida Republican, looking stern, told the Senate on Thursday.“The alternative is to do nothing.”

What we have today is devastating and horrible for our economy,” he added, citing public costs when those who are here illegally rely on public hospitals or drive without licenses or insurance.
Doing nothing, he said, amounts to an “amnesty.”
And “amnesty” is just what critics are calling the bill that Rubio and a bipartisan group of seven fellow senators introduced this week.
Rubio tried to ward off attacks with a series of preemptive TV and radio interviews. He partly succeeded but still faces grumbling, especially from conservatives who say the bill would reward law-breaking by granting legal status and a path to citizenship to many of the 11 million people here illegally, including about 825,000 in Florida.
In response, Rubio is stressing the bill’s provisions to expand enforcement at the borders and worksites. In his Senate speech, he noted that those who seek legal status would not qualify for government benefits and must pay fines and “go to the back of the line” to apply.
“It’s a temporary grant of a temporary status,” he said.“In six years you have to go back and apply again for this permit. And when you re-apply you have to pay another fine and another application fee. But you are going to have to prove that you’ve been paying taxes for the past six years and have been gainfully employed in a way that means you’re not going to wind up on public assistance.”
Rubio’s emphasis on all the restrictions and conditions is designed to reassure those who want to restrict immigration, but that invites criticism from the left.
Immigrant advocates are generally encouraged by the bill, a potential breakthrough on a thorny issue that might actually pass Congress. But they are troubled by conditions that they fear would discourage immigrants from coming forward and might leave many in a second-class-citizen class.
Of the eight sponsors, Rubio has the most at stake in this debate.
Victory on this bill would give him a signature issue that could propel him into a leadership role, including a potential run for the presidency. But he faces a tricky balancing act, hoping to show compassion without offending tea party supporters who helped elect back in Florida.

Hey Rubio, just let let 12 to 20 million lawbreakers dilute the already devalued and abused citizenship of Americans. If it is not valuable enough to defend with upholding the laws, then why the pfuq do you MFers send us a tax bill?

And another thing 'compassion' for law breakers is a leftist construct.

Don't you talk to him like that! He's the new GOP darling and potentially 2016 candidate against Hilary. You got a better candidate than him, stop fuking with Palin and Mitt!
I don't care about the laws as long as we keep cheap labor and keep our cost of living low, sick of these government regulations and pro-union legislature and stop our economy to grow.
Your parents should know about "cheap labor". I bet our taxes paid for them dropping you on your head in the delivery room. And, Its "Low Life" living, not the cost of living you're worried about, Leech.

Anyone for amnesty for invading trash should never be elected or re-elected. Instead they should be tried for treason, convicted and promptly hung.

I wasn't born in some filthy public hospital you socialist asswipe. Do you really want to know the cost my parents paid for my delivery? You're going to have to add 10 years of your income tax to make one of me that's right. You can keep complaining about how your tax is being wasted for someone else kids but you don't have an ounce of courage to do something about it. No wonder why America is in such a bad shape with you baby boomers taking handouts, this country was already in a mess before my birth.

You were conceived in an alley and delivered on Uncle Sam's doorstep, Leech. And I doubt it has only been 10 years of my income tax to haul your lazy families trailer around, Twerp.

It really is not about immigration actually it's just about illegal Mexicans.
It's bigger than that, we have plenty of problems with the legal end as well.

Is that you george? You keep changing your names here after each debate defeat. That's some alley back then more like 5th Ave in Manhattan and yes Uncle Sam had the red carpet pulled out as soon as I arrived, he said his country need educated professions (doctors, lawyers, surgeons and engineers) and none can be found in the native land. So here comes another wave of white immigrants from Russia.

They were much less restrictive in 1865. You once again show how clueless you are about American history.

We need to enforce existing illegal immigration law.

I am not hearing about any other nationality in quantities guilty of illegally entering the country.
No more wet backs please, we have too many already that we need to get rid of.
But hey they vote Democrat right?

All I keep hearing when people disagree with this plan is how we have 11 million illegals in this country and no way to track them down? Really? Are you flipping kidding me? How many illegals were at the DNC in Charlotte? They had signs and were flaunting to the press that they were illegals! Why didn't immigration sweep in when the bus rolled to a stop, check IDs, and start deporting them?

You get caught in the US illegally you are deported. Photographed and fingerprinted. This info goes into a database. You get a warning and sent home. Next time you're caught you get 5 years hard labor in a prison camp. You get caught a 3rd time you're executed and your body donated to science or your organs donated to American citizens who need organ transplants.

The FBI needs to check out more of these individuals who travel back to terrorist states like Somalia, Afghanistan and that have ties to terrorism.

The country is not safe and to continue to bring in more and more of this people is un-American.

Rubio must go. He is clueless and care more about immigrants from the Third World than he does about U.S. Citizens who work and pay taxes and whose limbs are being blown off and whose children are dying in the streets.
