Ohio State football: Former players to line up in support | BuckeyeXtra

"I just don't like the idea of being let go. I think the world of the man, and he did a hell of a job for us." - Pandel Savic, 86, quarterback of OSU's 1949 Big Ten championship team John Hicks grew weary of talking heads criticizing Ohio State and its football program, so he decided to do something about it. Savic is right. Tressel was treated badly, and unfairly, by OSU and by the media, including this paper front and center. One only has to read the NCAA transcript to see that. I too am 100% behind Luke Fickel. As for this paper, it has lost my respect.

Tim,

The passage of time and only the passage of time will eventually bring Jim Tressel back into the light. Er, well, a loss to Brady Hoke this November might also speed up the growth of Tressel's stock in these parts as well.

Without question the discontent and anger fueled by the events of the last 6 months has split the Buckeye nation into various camps. Some are ashamed and embarrassed to be Ohio State fans, and some think this entire saga has been totally overblown. Most fall somewhere in the middle. I remain totally at a loss for words toward those who have reached the determination that Jim Tressel's overall character and depth as a human being has been fair game throughout this saga? Where in the world does that come from - particularly from writers and others who never met Tressel or his terrific wife Ellen?

I'm not sure if that's a reflection of our current day vitriolic culture or just a bi-product of the Internet's ability to bring out the worst from anonymous posters -- or online sportswriters & bloggers seeking to satisfy self-interests that have little to do with Jim Tressel or Ohio State.

The Tressel - Tattoo scandal or whatever, has brought our collective character under a magnifying glass and it hasn't been a pretty sight.

I see 2 things wrong with doing this during the season opener given Hicks' remarks:

1)(paraphrasing) "Oh, we support Coach Fickell but we're going to be out there en masse to protest the firing of Tressel." Sorry, this is double-talk.

2) The Tunnel of Pride was created as a motivator for what was once the biggest game of the season. Don't cheapen it with a double-speak protest.

Personally, I'd love to see those former players out there before every home game. But, it has been considered something special and this seems like the wrong venue.

Go Bucks!

Very very proud to be a Buckeye fan of over 5o years. Very proud of the football player alumni for doing this for Coach Tressel. He paid a huge price for his mistakes, but the former football players appreciate all that he has done for the football program, the University, and the community outside OSU.

Thank you John Hicks for organizing this showing of support and appreciation for Coach Tressel, the 2011 Buckeye football team and the coaching staff.

Only 37 more days until the opening kickoff to the 2011 football season. Can't wait.

GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!!

Great for them! Proud to see someone stand up to this nonsense. Hope they pull together to get Gene Smith thrown out for his continual lies. Trustees-are you listening to the people??? Do your job and stop just sitting around.

Apparently with age doesn't come wisdom. OSU's coach was fired entirely because of his own actions. He was in a position of authority and didn't do his job. Some fans don't expect much for $4,000,000.

Clearly ESPN has some bizarre irrational hatred of OSU, and its ex coach. But on the opposite extreme, Sweater Vest fans have chosen jury nullification blaming student athletes, lawyers, administrators and anyone else at OSU but him.

When you sign a kid that is a moron, you placed your chips and you have to accept the outcome. Next time maybe go for someone with some character if that even exists anymore.

Maybe you meant to post your comment to a different story appearing in today's sports section?

A couple of thoughts....

1) This tunnel of pride is in support of the team, coaching staff, OSU, and former coach Tressel and there is nothing wrong when it comes from the heart.

2)ESPN and its reporting slant comes from the fact they they no longer own all the rights to a bunch of Big Ten games due to Fox and the Big Ten network its a simple as that.

Any fan should appreciate what Tressel did for Ohio State during his career. At the same time, I think these guys should focus on the season and start to move on. Lets focus on this season, bringing up the negatives from the off-season shifts the focus off the 2011 season.

When you lie, you risk losing your job. Tressel lied and lost his job. Everyone can blame Pryor, but if Tressel tells the truth and does the right thing, he keeps his job. He didn't get shafted and those that say otherwise are deluding themselves and setting a poor example for others, including their children.

Agreed, Pryor and Tressel are gone (thank goodness Pryor is! What a load of trouble!). Whatever was right and wrong, it is time to move on.

I didn't get the impression the tunnel had anything to do with Tressel. That seemed more of a side note. The tunnel for the first game is to show support for the remaining team by the former players.

I think the plaaned show of support is for the program in totality, not just Coach Tressel who has been a great part of it. I think very highly of Luke Fickell and believe he will do us proud. The demonstration should inspire and remind him of the great responsibility that comes with his new job.

Look no further than todays news from Carolina to see how firing coaches has become the popular solution for universities to give the appearance to the NCAA that they are "doing something" in hopes of gaining leniency. It's a shame the AD's and university administrations don't have the backbone to support their coaches in the same fashion the coaches support their players and the school.

I for one plan to be wearing my red vest on opening day and am proud to say that I can see the bigger picture of who and what Jim Tressel stands for. For those that disagree, I submit that, "it's far easier to be opinionated than it is to be informed" -- Read the Tressel testimony transcript and reach your own informed conclusion instead of blindly letting the media to become your brain.

It is about time we Buckeyes join together in a manner of support for the Coach. Much of the embarrassment has been generated by the school management including the AD & his staff!!
God bless you coach!!

Your comment misses some obvious points. First is that the fan base finds no satisfaction or bragging rights in fielding a team comprised of honor roll, high character kids --- unless of course they get the W's,

Second is that many times these so-called morons (your words) can turn out to be diamonds in the rough once they are polished by the right hands. It is obvious that true coaches (especially the Woody's and Tressel's of the world), take great pride in shaping the entire human being, not just the football player. That brings with it an element of risk but more often a great sense of reward for people who are motivated by positively changing and shaping young lives. Fixing a problem takes more talent than fixing the blame.

Gee, all the former OSU jockstraps coming out in support of the Buckeyes and Tressel. What a surprise...not!
