The devastating new details of Danvers High math teacher Colleen Ritzer’s murder have reopened the still-healing emotional wounds of her beloved students, as authorities alleged yesterday that the freshman charged with the killing also raped her and stole her underwear in the horrifying after-school assault last month.

“I’m really shocked. No one would have even thought of that before. Wow,” said Colin Butler, 17, a Danvers High senior and former student in Ritzer’s class.“Extremely inhumane — that’s all I can think of. I don’t think anyone would have even fathomed that. No one had any idea of that. None of us, it never even crossed our minds.”

A grand jury indicted 14-year-old Philip D. Chism yesterday on charges of murder, aggravated rape and armed robbery in the Oct. 22 box-cutter slashing in a Danvers High bathroom. The rape and armed robbery charges were new and unexpected; prosecutors say Chism sexually assaulted the 24-year-old Ritzer with an unspecified object and took several of her belongings, including her iPhone, credit cards and underwear.

“We are devastated and heartbroken by the details of the horrific circumstances surrounding the death of our beautiful daughter and sister, Colleen,” the Ritzer family said in a statement.“As a family, we continue to mourn Colleen’s passing and ask that the media respect our privacy during this very difficult time.”

Neither the indictments nor prosecutors’ statements about the case provided any insight as to why Chism, a junior-varsity soccer standout who moved here recently from Tennessee, allegedly unleashed such an atrocious assault on Ritzer.

“The indictments returned today detail horrific and unspeakable acts,” Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said yesterday.

Denise Regan, Chism’s court-appointed attorney, did not return a telephone message last night.

Chism, who has been held without bail since his Oct. 23 arrest, is being charged as an adult in the murder case and as a youthful offender in the rape and robbery case, meaning any trial would be held in public and that he could receive an adult punishment if convicted. Youthful-offender cases are typically tried in juvenile court, but prosecutors say they want all three cases in superior court.

The alleged depravity of the crimes likely weighed heavily in Blodgett’s decision to prosecute the teen in adult court.

“The very simple but apt approach is, adult punishment for adult crimes,” said former Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone.“When you commit armed robbery, aggravated rape and murder, when you start with that, the presumption is you’ll be treated like an adult.”

According to authorities and witnesses, Chism was staying after school for extra help in Ritzer’s class when he followed her into a second-floor bathroom, slashed her with a box cutter, wheeled her body out in a large recycling bin and dumped it in the woods behind the school. He then went to the movies for an afternoon showing of Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine.” He was found wandering along Route 1 in Topsfield hours later.

"...sexually assaulted the 24-year-old Ritzer with an unspecified object..."

According to those in the know, that was a tree branch.

I also noticed the words "hate crime" didn't appear anywhere in the article. What exactly constitutes a hate crime against a white victim? Is there any such thing?

Worst of all, he apparently paid to see a Woody Allen movie. Fry the bastard. Now.

The Danvers High School freshman charged with murdering, raping and robbing his math teacher was agitated and speaking to himself in the moments before the killing, investigators said in newly released court documents that suggest the crime was planned and carried out in a white-hot rage.

The papers reveal frightening new details in the case against 14-year-old Philip Chism and the discovery of 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer’s body, including:

• Investigators found a folded, handwritten note saying “I hate you all” beside her body in the woods behind the school;

• Her throat was cut, she was naked from the waist down and she was sexually assaulted with a three-foot object;

• A student apparently walked in mere moments after the box-cutter killing in a second-floor bathroom and told investigators she believed she saw someone later identified as Chism changing clothes; and

•   Chism wore a mask and gloves when he wheeled Ritzer’s body out of the bathroom in a recycling bin and took it into the elevator, and is seen on video wearing several outfits including a white shirt, a black shirt and a red sweatshirt.

“Because Philip Chism came to school armed with a box cutter, a balaclava/ski mask, gloves and a multiple changes of clothing (sic), I have reason to believe he planned the crime,” state Trooper Robert C. LaBarge wrote in the documents, filed in support of a warrant to search Chism’s home.

The papers provide the first insight into Chism’s mindset the afternoon of the Oct. 22 killing. The teen “became visibly upset” during an after-school tutoring session with Ritzer, a student in the classroom told investigators. Chism and Ritzer had been chatting about China, but the conversation turned to Tennessee, where Chism lived before moving to Danvers months ago with his mother and siblings amid his parents’ failing marriage, the documents say.
