I dunno WA. I have known a lot of folks. Some look like that and some don't. I have seen some really young moms grow up very fast--in terms of those things you mention, cooking and taking care of business. But they are swimming upstream. A person can only work so hard and the kinds of jobs you can get without a degree are only going to pay so much.<quoted text> Believe me that a lot of single black women with kids are young ignorant and ghettoized. I"LL bet you $1000 to 1, that vulgar gangster rap plays daily in those homes, and there's plenty of video games and no books! Not even a Bible are in most of those apartments.
The 'babies momma ' can't cook, balance a checking account, knows zero about government besides a EBT card, and knows zero about black or American history!
But to the extent that we continue to live our lives as if the ghetto didn't exist, or everyone who lives there has abundant opportunity to "get out" (and ponder awhile why we put such a premium on "getting out" instead of improving) all we do is ensure that we will continue to have a ghetto and kids who cannot even see (let alone believe in) any other options for their lives.
Ever read any Paolo Friere (Pedagogy of the Oppressed)? He's not an easy read. And righties have a knee-jerk opposition to him. But, his essence (and Jonathon Kozol has picked up on this as well) is that true education cannot occur in an absence of empowerment. We cannot bypass parents and expect to somehow educate their children to be a part of a world to which the parents have been denied admission.
End of the day, jobs cure a lot of ills.
