Channel 6 had a very kitschy logo in the late 1960's/early 1970's.

It looks almost cartoon like. Looks like something designed by there Hanna Barbera animators, which Hanna Barbera was owned by Taft Broadcasting during this era.

WGR was also a Taft Broadcasting station. Wanna bet Hanna Barbera did their logo too?

Most stations and station groups hire consultants to do these sorts of things for them these days. One exception is ABC and ABC's company-owned television stations. Since they are owned by Disney, all their artistic work is done in house, including the design of their news sets.

When I learned that, that's when the light bulb went off that Taft was probably doing the same thing back in those days. Why hire outside help when you have some of the world's best artists and animators working in house?

Somebody needs to talk to the Wolfes. Channel 10's set is generic and their logo is straight from a Soviet design bureau.

WBNS sucks, but they do a great job at their station in Indy in terms of their artwork. They should just centralize graphics in Indy, IMO, not to mention the their new news that is a real train wreck. Channel 6 has the best looking news set by far.

Wthr.com

Here's something else I stumbled across. It may not be obvious unless you look closely, but WNCN uses the same package that WCMH uses as they are both on by Media General.

I think they do a better job with it and they use a more snappy version of the same music. I think they're trying to use a triangle theme here because the station is located in the Triangle.

Here is WFLA version of the same package. Notice they use the same font and they don't overdo it using circles. Notice the Florida style colors instead of the garish red. I don't really mind the red, but I think they need to tweak it to give it a more 3D look like the Raleigh version.

yes that always wasn't attractive logo. Ranks right up there with the abc circle 7 logos as classics.

The WPVI logo in Philadelphia is also classic kitschy logo not to mention that Channel 6 here had a similar logo back in the 70's along with a catchy jingle singing "Chan-nel Siiiiiiiiiiii-xxxxxxx."

This is a must see video. This is a viewer's dog singing along to the classic "Move Closer to Your World" closing jingle that has been used for over 40 years at that station. This is probably the best TV News theme ever.

All the stations did back in those days. Some were canned packages that were used nationally and modified for Columbus. Others were originals developed by the local stations.

I always liked this theme music which is called "home country", and which was developed by Al Hamm the same composer who created the classic "move closer to your world". Channel 4 used this package in the 1970s, they also had some real catchy lifestyle advertisements that ran with lyrics using the same music (4 country is your country, cause 4 country is you ...)

youtube.com/watch...

Channel 4's "that's what friends are for" campaign I believe was developed by composer John Tatgenhorst, a Columbus native.

(thats what friends are 4, thats what friends are 4, at channel 4, that's what friends are for)

Joe Holbrook was the best! Blizzard of 1978. He said prior to the storm changing from rain to snow that night and the winds beginning to increase that he had not seen the barometer drop as it had and that it was going to be bad. He was correct!
