Wis. 8th Grade Crossword Puzzle Definitions: Conservatism =‘Restricting Personal Freedoms,’ Liberalism =‘Personal Freedom for Everyone’

A mother at a Wisconsin public school said her daughter’s eighth grade class was assigned a worksheet with some eyebrow-raising definitions for “conservatism” and “liberalism.”

Conservatism, it stated in part, believes in “preserving traditional moral values by restricting personal freedoms” while liberalism is for “equality and personal freedom for everyone.”

“This is indoctrination,” Tamra Varebrook, a Republican activist in Racine, Wis., told TheBlaze on Thursday after her 13-year-old daughter showed her the crossword-style vocabulary sheet from Union Grove Elementary School earlier this week. Varebrook first talked about the assignment with the news arm of the conservative Education Action Group.

Varebrook said she complained to Brenda Stevenson, district administrator at Union Grove, who apologized profusely and said it never should have been taught. Varebrook was told the teacher was required to correct the definition to the class Wednesday while the assistant principal observed.

Stevenson did not immediately return a request for comment from TheBlaze.

The worksheet was a product of Sunburst Visual Media, and Varebrook said she was told the teacher hadn’t read through it closely before handing it out. Varebrook said she believed that — until she was forwarded a PDF of the entire educational unit and found the same definition for “conservatism” repeated multiple times.

Varebrook didn’t name the teacher, whom she described as a “kind” person who — along with Stevenson — was not among the educators to sign petitions to try to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker last year.

Still, she wants answers as to how the worksheet was assigned. She said there are four eighth-grade classes and assumes it was part of the lesson for all students.

“Somebody has got to be held accountable to know what is being taught,” Varebrook said.

A closer look at the worksheet is available here.

Cerebellum Corporation, the parent company of Sunburst Visual Media, did not immediately return an emailed request for comment from TheBlaze.

Yes Paco, you did. Read your first post, then read the clues. The entire text of the clues is not restated in your first post.

You do know what redact means...right?

How about truncate?

Funny how Republicans and Democrats managed to co-exist before the New Democrats took over and decided that they couldn't win elections without demonizing the other side 24/7. Oh, and freaking women out by saying their birth control might not be free.

Just man up for once in your sorry life and deal with it. Your side is having a bad news day. It happens...but naturally you leftists see it as some sort of plot.

Its a f'in crossword puzzle, with clues, not definitions. Do you know what a crossword puzzle is? Do you know the difference between a clue and a definition?

I swear, you would find a subversive intent in pouring a glass of water.

Do you think 13 year old kids having this handed to them by their teacher know the difference? Do you get that, douche?
Notice how the administration fell all over themselves apologizing...a rare and refreshing outcome.

I know that when I was ten I surely knew the difference.

I wouldn't have apologized at all. Those administrators are wimps.

It's indoctrination, the administration recognized it and they did the right thing. The fact that it angers you tells us that you believe in a leftist slant in public education.

Who said I was angry. I simply think you're histrionic.

Who's primarily responsible for instilling common sense, values, and the desire to think independently in your children...you, or the teachers at their school?

Why do you act as if you're impotent in teaching your children, regardless of whether or not they might hear something at school that you might fundamentally disagree with? Why do you think its imperative to protect them from other viewpoints? What are you teaching them by raising a ruckus over such minutiae? If you had a concern about this issue, instead of calling the school, wouldn't a more productive means of addressing the matter, as a parent, be to sit down with your child and provide them personally with wording that you would have used as an alternative, and explaining why?

In a world filled with a wide variety of opposing viewpoints, wouldn't they be better served to function in that world if you as their parent taught them how to actually think independently within the confines of reality, rather than shielding them from it?

You folks are always pisssin and moanin about other people, when you've got the control right there in your own hands and you refuse to use it.

Say what? You are a moron. You piss and moan about how people like us raise our kids. And you know damn well that you leftists want the state to do it:

WASHINGTON, DC (Catholic Online)- Since the furor over Melissa Harris-Perry's comments has not died down, I have decided to weigh in. For my readers who may not yet know what the comments were, here is a transcript of a commercial she did for the MSNBC network:

"We have never invested as much in public education as we should have. We haven't had a very collective notion of, these are our children. We have to break through our private idea that children belong to their parents, or children belong to their families, and recognize that children belong to whole communities. Once it's everybody's responsibility and not just the household's, we start making better investments."

Media pundits have been busily dissecting Ms Harris-Perry's words in this controversial commercial. She has partially succeeded in what she probably intended, bringing notoriety to herself in order to continue her efforts to remake the social vision of this Nation.

Some defending her views have tried to dismiss the outrage they elicited among those who object to collectivism as simply 'right wing' or 'conservative'. They use both as terms of derision in order to dismiss the argument without engaging in any intelligent debate.

Some thoughtful analysts pointed out that her basic premise in the first sentence is false, that we have not spent enough on public education. The truth is we spend much more than most Nations and we have reaped very poor results.

I also take exception to the straw man argument in her second sentence. Her effort is clear, to denigrate the role of parents and the value of the family. Respecting the primacy of parents and the family is not a private notion at all. It is profoundly public and has great implications for how we structure our society.

Her language is loaded. She intentionally makes it sound as though the idea of the primacy of parents is an outdated concept which makes children property. That is nonsense. Worse, it is propaganda of the rankest kind.

Yeah Paco..you heard me. Stop wasting the time of your school administrators and staff, and do your job as a parent. Teach your kids how to think on their own, and quit blaming others for the fact that this is by its very nature, a big world, with lost of different people in it, with lots of different opinions.

Stop coddling your kids.
