And that's the difference between us. I can get drunk at home, though rarely anymore. I can go to a casino 10 miles from my home. When I travel, it's to get some experiences and sights I can't get here. I try to LEARN some things. And the Caribbean has close to zero allure for me.
figures

the caribbean has zero allure to you

best fishing, best beach, interesting culture, great weather, most beautiful water, jungle, paradise.

People don't really think about how tenuous their rights are after they leave our borders. And many of the Caribbean islands outside of the tourist enclaves are cesspools.
and many are not.

maybe you need to up your budget of $50 a night for a room.

I haven't been to ANY of the islands. I've read reference works and listen to friends and family who have been on cruises, etc., and other than the Caymans, maybe the Turks and Caicos, they all sound like hellholes OUTSIDE the tourist areas. And I like to explore too much to be confined like that.
I like Naples, FL and Ocean City, MD. I want to try the Florida Panhandle and possibly Biloxi, and I have read where to go and not go from those of you who have been, so don't go to a lot of effort, I've already "listened", as it were.
The Florida Panhandle is the best combination of beautiful beaches and bang for your buck accommodations in America.

Biloxi is "Gatlinburg-on-the-Beach "....LOL.
Good to know, just went through G-burg last April for the first time in decades, everything's changed, but nothing has. Not my cup of tea. Several had told me Biloxi was nice, but since Mississippi is my least favorite state I was skeptical. But I know beach areas are more laid-back than rural areas.

For the most part beaches are BORING to me. Who wants to waste time baking in the sun or fishing? Not me. You do know that clear water means an oceanic desert, don't you? Sure it looks like lots of sea life, but that's nothing compared to what's up in the waters off Maine.

Paradise to me is not the Caribbean.

I do. I think your idle mind sipping on a beverage scares you. Heaven forbid you listen to the waves, look at the wild life, hear the birds, make new friends from around the country. Oh, what a pathetic life I live.

Ocean City MD is only two hours from me. Crowded. So is Naples.

Ahhh, the panhandle of FL. Those little, hidden towns. I agree, George.

I lived in FL, Hollywood/Hallandale/Davie/Ft. Lauderdale area, 5 months of the year my whole childhood. It was not so crowded then. My brother left here 40 years ago and never looked back. The changes in South Florida over the decades, in population and diversity, are dramatic. The chief of the Seminoles used to coach 130 lb. football with my brother. Mike Tiger. Loved his stories about the glades. They have been overtaken by develpment now.

<quoted text>Why is that sad? I swear you have never had a good, memorable time in your life outside of Ohio. I'm not insinuating that you need to be drunk to have a good time, but there's nothing wrong with acting the fool at a resort. I'm an honorary activity assistant every time we travel. Even the kids yell, hey Miss Glitter, when are you getting in the pool? Water volleyball!!!!!!!!
Silly, giggling drunk? Like two beers on a Friday night after getting work behind you for the week and you're tired and relaxing and a couple friends come by?

You come with me, Glitter. Drinking or not drinking, I don't care. Getting out of the US and kicking totally back with a nap to look forward to at 4 PM is the best.

Well why did you call them cesspools? The wildlife and foliage on the Turks and Caicos is wonderful. Really beautiful places.
I have no fear in Cable Beach. There is not a crime problem because the penalties are so harsh and jails so horrible. There is a great old Fort built to repel pirates back in the day that is free to explore.

Cruises are not for me. Too confining. You have to dress for every meal. Different place everyday. I'd rather fly in and land at 10 AM and be on the beach at noon...never to apply make-up for a week or anything more formal than a t-shirt.

OMG. We are so in agreement on this one. I always meet people. Snorkeling is the best. Entertainment: Sitting on the balconey watching the drunks stumble off of the 'booze cruise' and stagger up the beach.

There's a book "Hidden Florida'. See if you can find it on Amazon. Covers the whole state, including the keys; all the little nooks and crannies the tourists miss. Well worth the $ if you can find it.

Cable beach, jumping on stage, doing the Thriller dance....Not a vacation unless I tend bar and play a musical instrument. I have been successful for the last 15 years.

Tried snorkeling once at Turtle Bay in Oahu. I had trouble breathing with the thing. It was clear, just too much pressure on my lungs I guess, which is funny because I play a wind instrument and have no problems otherwise. Anyway, gave it up within 10 minutes.

Not everything is for everybody.

Not the case at all. I have a personal reason not to get drunk, and I don't go into those here.

Apparently you didn't read my previous post about all my traveling. Except for listening to the waves, I have done all that in my travels to places other than the beach. Come to think of it, I've stayed in places on the Great Lakes where the waves were about 50 feet away from our lodging, we went to sleep listening to them.

I just would rather be learning stuff than frying in the sand.
