Mr. Putnam grew up in my hometown, went to the same schools as I did there through high school, bowled at the alley my uncle worked at. I agree his is quite accomplished in his field.<quoted text>
I won't call it an obsession, just an area of interest. Violence is the norm for most of the history of mankind, dulled in part by our technological progress, but not eliminated.
Much of what he writes in that piece is pure common sense, and his conclusions and recommendations are not what you are characterizing them to be. You should read closer.
In my opinion, one can sum it up this way: Racism is still with us, and pervades our social interactions.
Last fall he wrote an interesting piece on our hometown:
While many of those who have personal knowledge of that area found the piece to be informative and full of truth, certain aspects were quite innacurate (the selection of photographs that accompany the article, for instance), and slanted purposefully in order to support the author's general premise.
