That's downright sad and pathetic on both counts."... an estimated 31,000,000 buffalo were killed between the years of 1868 and 1881 with only 500 buffalo left by the year of 1885.
By the end of the 19th Century, the Native American population was only 237,000, down from one million a century earlier."
There was an incident in my area a few years back. These people had buffalo on their farm and one day, somehow, they got out of their fenced in area. A woman driving down the street spotted them and stopped, but one of the buffalo charged her car and she called police. Instead of using tranquilizing guns, they shot them dead.
I was so upset that in this day and age they didn't have the right equipment to handle a large animal, which could have been returned to the owner.
Just like the case of when all the wild animals were let lose and they shot them dead, instead of using the tranquilizing gun.
