Public funds pay for Hawaii trip

Three board members of the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio are budgeted to spend more than $11,000 of public funds to attend a five-day conference at the Hilton Hawaiian Village hotel.
The conference, hosted by the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems, takes place in May at the Honolulu hotel, which boasts the largest spa in Waikiki, five pools, 22 acres of white-sand beaches and “a world of blissful relaxation and rejuvenation,” according to its website.
Tim Barbour, a spokesman for the pension fund, said the system’s board of trustees considered the perception of taking a trip to Hawaii but decided that the pros outweighed the cons.
“Some people view (the conference) as a vacation rather than working,” Barbour said.“The people who voted saw the means for the education.”
Rep. Lynn Wachtmann, R-Napoleon, applauded the “wisdom and judgment” of the four other state pension systems, which chose not to send representatives to Hawaii.

I highly recommend the Hilton Hawaiian Village...but not on taxpayer dollars.
Still, I can only see good coming of this meeting.
It certainly will not endear public educators to Ohio voters.

With all the changes (NOT in favor of the retiree or future retiree) that has occurred during the last several years, why would any public pension system even think about planning a meeting like this?? Makes about as much sense as sending a bunch of employees to a convention in Las Vegas, which is stupid as well. People end up on boards like this out of political favors AND they tend to be the "I now have something to brag about at my bridge club or country club" persona. They make excuses as to why we have to work more years to reach our retirement goals, but they use their seat on these boards to eat, socialize, and go on trips. I too applaud the ones who opted out and were outraged; and I believe that the person who insists they need to attend to "bounce ideas" is a total idiot whose IQ does not qualify them for the board seat they occupy. I bet they put their room service on the retirement system tab as well! Lastly, the STRS board member who exclaimed that that "we love our teachers" when all these system changes occurred... stick you love where the sun don't shine!
