CLEVELAND, Ohio -- More than 100 people -- at times uneasy and chanting "murder" -- jammed into the basement of a Cleveland church tonight to question city safety officials about the police shooting of two people last week.

Cleveland Public Safety Director Marty Flask gave brief details about the incident and responded to criticism about the way the department has handled the officers.

The crowd at Greater Abyssinia Baptist Church in Cleveland had been generally respectful in the first half an hour, but before Police Chief Michael McGrath had ended his first remarks, he was interrupted by Walter Jackson, the uncle of Malissa Williams.

"I know you are going to give the facts, but we want the truth," Jackson said.

Jackson also asked McGrath: "Will these officers be brought up on murder charges?"

The crowd applauded.

A woman who said she was a cousin of Williams said the police harass homeless people. She said the police want to get rid of Williams.

"They wanted to murder her," the woman said. "They wanted to get rid of her and they did."

The crowd clapped and some yelled, "No justice, no peace!"
Some in the crowd began to chant "murder" and one man yelled: "Rodney King to the 30th power."

Police Chief Michael McGrath said it could take up to six weeks for an administrative investigation to be completed.

Mayor Frank Jackson also addressed the crowd about the investigation.

"Rest assured, what we know we will let you know," Jackson said.

The meeting was organized by city officials and leaders of the church, who hold elected positions with the Cleveland NAACP.

It was a week ago tonight, Nov. 29, 2012, when suspects Timothy Russell, 43, and Williams, 30, were shot and killed in a hail of gunfire from Cleveland officers after a car driven by Russell led police on a 25-minute chase that ended in East Cleveland.

Thirteen officers fired 137 shots at the pair as the pursuit of the pair ended near Heritage Middle School in East Cleveland. The case is under investigation. The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification has assigned two agents to assist the East Cleveland Police department.

Blaine Griffin, executive director for the city’s community relations board, said the purpose of the meeting was to create a forum where leaders could listen to concerns from the public keep the lines of communication open.

“Silence can create a lot of anxiety,” Griffin said.“It is important we show the public we want to be as transparent as possible.”
Meanwhile, the families of Russell and Williams have retained legal counsel.

Members of civil rights organizations such as the Cleveland NAACP and grassroots groups like Peace in The Hood, The Opressed People’s Nation and Black on Black Crime Inc. were in attendance at the church.

Community activist Khalid Samad, who leads Peace in the Hood, an anti-gang violence group, said he planned to tell city officials and attendees he believes the officers used excessive force and that city police need more sensitivity and procedural training.

“We have to revisit everything for top to bottom,” Samad said in an interview.“This is possibly the worst use of excessive deadly force in the history of any police department.

“They abused the corpses of those people.”

This is life in my racial community:

The black newspaper said, "(Tim McGinty) issued the warrant for police to storm the family home of 16-year-old Brandon McCloud, a Black teen accused of robbing a pizza delivery man who was shot and killed in a closet in his home by Cleveland police some 12 times, though unarmed. And to make matters worse, in preparing to go after McCloud, police were allegedly caught on tape saying something to the fact of let's kill somebody today."
