The Swing
How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Robert Louis Stevenson
This is one of my favorite poems.....
I recited this poem when my children were swinging on the swing set.
They still remember it.

There's one I have never forgotten: Sea Shell by Amy Lowell. I loved it because of the imagery. I had to memorize it in fourth grade. The teacher that year loved to teach lessons that crossed boundaries. We were learning the basics of poetry and she was teaching geography at the same time--we were studying the Caribbean.

Sea shell, sea shell
Sing me a song, oh please
A song of ships and sailor men
Of parrots and tropical trees
Of islands lost in the Spanish main
Which no man may ever find again
Of fishes and corals under the waves,
And seahorses stabled in great green caves.
Sea shell, sea shell
Sing of the things you know so well.
