Another place where ODOT needs to make changes but nobody at ODOT cares.

The intersection at Rathmell Rd. and South High Street is a death trap of the worse kind. Some of the danger could be controlled by the installation of flashing advance yellow lights, that the red light is about to change.

My niece has had 2 accidents at that intersection. One was her fault the other wasn't but either way there needs to be something done there.

Also the speed limit in that area from Scioto Downs on the south to I-270 on the North is 50mph
I see vehicles going 60mph or more mph all the time.

They need to enforce the speed limit more in this area.

How many more have to be killed at this spot before flashing lights are installed to let drivers know when to expect a change? Other than the shopping area at Circleville, this is the only intersection that doesn't have the advance warning (at least between here and Chillicothe).

I had done traffic counts - for improvments - at that intersection with three separate consultants in teh last 20 years. Funny still looks like the same intersection I remember sitting at in the mid-90's.

But remember the perfect engineering solution is still at the mercy of the worst driver

I said it before; SPEED KILLS. This intersection is a death trap. It just goes to show the incompetence of our FRANKLYN county engineers. They dont have to do their jobs, the way anyone else has to. The speed limit in that area needs to lowered, flashing lights need to go up, and ENFORCEMENT needs to be increased. There a lot of intersections like this around Columbus. Sponge1, you are right, ODOT DOES NOT CARE. They work for the STATE, therefor they are held to a lower standard than the rest of us.
I pray for Anyone that has to travel thru that intersection.

There are limits to arbitarily setting speed limits as a result of the Ohio Revised Code having speeds covered in its statutes.

I also will take to task anyone who says that State workers or any engineers work to a lower standard because of who pays thier checks. Engineering standards are engineering standards for the City of Columbus, Franklin County, Dublin or ODOT.

Now I am not 100% sure what the standards for placing a Prepare to Stop When Flashing installation for the intersection but looking at it on the aerials on Google Earth, the intersection appears to be standard.

On thing that traffic engineers like to think of is traffic acting like a fluid according to laws. Traffic will never work like that as drivers have the free will to not follow the laws and/or may just chose to ignore them.

Five were killed in one accident years ago. Nothing has changed. The speed limit is 50. Most ignore it. The placement of the B.P. station is a hinderance to traffic.

I agree about the "flashing lights" comment. I do believe that every traffic light between 270 and Chillicothe has a flashing light, with the exception of Rathmell Road. Also, 50 mph is way too fast for this intersection, but even if it was lowered, people will still go at least 60, for there is no enforcement.

I live on Rathmell and that intersection is a nightmare! The hill on the Northbound lanes of 23 just adds to the danger. It is hard to see the light turning red before you are right on it.

Also, many people think they can beat the light and people turning left onto Rathmell from southbound 23 have to be VERY cautious that the northbound 23 traffic will stop.

And the BP station entrance is a nightmare too. People dart across 23 without even looking.

A dangerous stretch of road for sure.

The B. P. gas station is about 1/2 mile north of this intersection.
How is it a hinderance?
As stated before the speed limit is 50 mph and it is ignored by many.

The hinderance is that cars going south on 23, are traveling at 60 to 65 miles per hour. They have to merge into the right lane, if they are turning east onto Rathmell they have to get left. There is also traffic turning into the gas station, and people leaving it in both directions. I have witnessed numerous accidents in front of this station as well as at the Rathmell intersection.

Confused now?
Why would cars headed south on 23 going 60 to 65 mph have to merge into the right lane?
If they were turning east onto Rathmell and turning left, they would have to merge into the left lane!
Unless they are turning from the right lane across 2 other lanes,
23 south at Rathmelll has 2 normal lanes and one left turn lane.
If anyone pulling out of or turning into the gas station can cause an accident at Rathmell I will give you a million dollars.
