...Perhaps the most clearly backlash books are those written by Paul Kersey, whose central theme is that whites have created thriving cities, which blacks subsequently took over and ruined. Examples include his books about Birmingham ("The Tragic City") and Detroit ("Escape from Detroit").

Kersey even takes a swing at Rush Limbaugh (and at yours truly) for saying that liberal policies destroyed these cities. He says that San Francisco and other cities with liberal policies, but without black demographic and political takeovers, have not been ruined. His books are poorly written, but raise tough questions.

It would be easy to simply dismiss Kersey as a racist. But denouncing him or ignoring him is not refuting him.

Refuting requires thought, which has largely been replaced by fashionable buzz words and catch phrases, when it comes to discussions of race.

Thought is long overdue. So is honesty.

There was a segment on 60 Minutes a few weeks back about Dan Gilbert and partners are revitalizing the Detroit area.

Detroit, years of corruption and graft. Not long ago, caught an NPR piece on whether the city would sell its artwork from their Art Institute in order to meet some of their debt.

They're still arguing whether the city should file bankruptcy. The unions are fighting it, since the city seemed to have squandered the pension funds and they're afraid of no payments to retirees. No-win situation if you ask me. Bulldoze Detroit, start over.

That 60 Min program mentioned the art work and the mayor refuses to sell art works.
Go figure. Neighborhood residents are rebuilding one house at a time. OY
If you think about it, it's truly sad.

There's an area along Woodward Avenue--the Midtown neighborhood--that's been "revitalizing." I somewhat know that area--Woodward leads directly to I75--have driven through Detroit a number of times. You're right, it's the residents and small business owners who are struggling to keep the area alive. There are pockets up there that are ok, but not many. To get to any retail or gas station, you need to get to the highway or the burbs believe it or not. So many businesses just up and left. Sucks if you're a resident within the city.

A lot of Detroit is a bombed out ghetto, it's glory days long past. My youngest went to college at Detroit-Mercy--which is fairly close to the Ambassador Bridge and Tunnel. We argued over whether or not she'd go to school there--I was terrified sending her to Detroit for college. Well, she won the argument cause they offered her a scholarship. We went for a student/parent visit and the kids have to go through locked iron gates with a smart card and the security in that school is incredible (armed gates, smart card entries to EVERYTHING, including parking lots, etc.). So that did make me feel better, but just driving to drop her off and visit her and attend her graduation creeped me out. But most of the neighborhoods have every other house, if not more, empty.

I'm amazed they won't sell the art works. As much as I can appreciate the art, it's an asset. Use it to pay your debt like everyone else has to!!! Assets are considered in personal bankruptcy cases, why not for the city???

Some people are stupid and obviously, the majority are in Detroit! Turn it into farmland, make it productive again, send the illegals there to do the farm work, since the people who are there, don't work, for the most part!

I'd say you should peruse the Detroit Free Press article I posted a link to, and you might get a better understanding of what actually transpired.

The comments attached to it are also rather enlightening.

When you have a Hardcore Pawn shop show represent your city and a corrupt Kwame Kilpatrick as a former mayor, not much good can be said.

they wouldnt even bother thinking of picking up an aluminum can since they have been getting everything for years provided free to them and is why Detroit is where it is at Socially and Economically since no body wants or feels they don't have to work when they feel they can get it free and that is I don't miss dealing with people from Detroit and Southeast Michigan at all.
