BTW, take a look at how much of chance Cleland had in the first place. He barely squeaked out his 1996 win by 1% because 4% was drained from his GOP opponent by a Libertarian candidate.
If you are trying to draw a direct comparison between those two politicians' service records, you really are more dense than I have ever given you credit for.

Only someone like you would compare W.'s national guard service to a guy who lost 3 limbs in combat. You just keep proving my point.

You are so easy. Just yesterday we were all supposed to be respecting all veterans based solely on their status as vets, no questions asked. Now, suddenly, we are parsing each individual veterans service to see if it qualifies for respect.

I happened to be flipping through channels the other day and watched "Born on the Fourth of July" for the first time in about 20 years. I find it interesting that Ron Kovic would be classified as a "dirt bag." The man lost his ability to walk and went through hell, but because he is an outspoken advocate for civil rights, speaks out about war, he's classified as a dirt bag and un-American. I guess only some vets deserve to be respected.
I don't believe any conservative on this site would wish to deny Mr Kovic his rights granted by the constitution.

He certainly has a long career of exercising them freely under conservative administrations.

Here is an interesting article about the movie, Born on the Fourth of July .

"On April 8, 1968, Captain Cleland was the Battalion Signal Officer for the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division during the Battle of Khe Sanh.[3]

On April 8, with a month left in his tour, Cleland was ordered to set up a radio relay station on a nearby hill. A helicopter flew him and two soldiers to the treeless top of Hill 471, east of Khe Sanh. Cleland knew some of the soldiers camped there from Operation Pegasus. He told the pilot he was going to stay a while with friends.

When the helicopter landed, Cleland jumped out, followed by the two soldiers. They ducked beneath the rotors and turned to watch the liftoff. Cleland reached down to pick up a grenade he believed had popped off his flak jacket. It exploded and the blast slammed him backward, shredding both his legs and one arm.

David Lloyd, a Marine in a nearby mortar bunker, rushed to the scene, took off his web belt and tied it around one of Cleland's shredded legs.[4] When the medics arrived, Lloyd left to help another injured soldier one of the two who had gotten off the helicopter with Cleland.

Lloyd claims that the unnamed soldier was crying.'It was mine,' he said,'it was my grenade.'

According to Lloyd, the private had failed to take the extra precaution that experienced soldiers did when they grabbed M-26 grenades from the ammo box: bend the pins, or tape them in place, so they couldn't accidentally dislodge. This soldier had a flak jacket full of grenades with treacherously straight pins, Lloyd says. "He was a walking death trap."[5]

Due to the severity of his injuries, doctors amputated both of Cleland's legs above the knee, and his right forearm; he was 25 years old.[6]"

I doubt that your Poppa would appreciate you disparaging Mr. Cleland's selfless gift of service like that.

It's called at best, a tragic accident. At worst, negligence on the part of the private. But it's not a combat injury.

Veterans are like any other peoples. In later life some support American Constitutionalism while others support socialism. Veterans have their opinions, likes and dislikes like everyone else.
John McCain has every right to support socialism and the socialist government in DC. And that has nothing to do with his military service. In the same vein Sarah Palin has just as much right as a nonveteran to believe what she wants, same same John McCain. Being in the military or not being in the military should have no bearing on what a person believes.
This particular forum is supposed to be about some veterans taking down the barricades at the Mall in DC. Kent State has nothing to do with this. Two different scenarios at two different times of this nation's history.
What we have now is proponents for the USA, United States of America and proponents for the USSA, United Socialist States of American which wasn't present in the days of Kent State.
Personally, being a veteran, I don't like anyone's politics who sides with the left in this country. Laying my veteranism aside, I am an American Constitutionalist and an opponent of the DC lefist socialism and whether they served in the military or not or serving in the military or not has no bearing with me concerning whether they are leftist or not.
Feel free to attack me personally but that won't change the fact of what I believe in, AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONALISM, and what I don't believe in, socialism.

Hey A.! I haven't been keeping up with Topix, but thought I'd say hey and hope you're doing well!
I haven't read most of these posts, but I happened to see something about the Kent State riots. I wasn't there, so I can't speak to it, but it made me think back about when I was in college and lived off campus. Whenever people "rioted" here, it was almost always the people who came from other schools/towns/etc. that were causing the problems. Not to say OSU kids didn't participate, but every time there were arrests made, many of those people were visiting.
Back in those days it wouldn't surprise me if people traveled there to protest, but who knows.
Figures. 99% of the time it's outside agitators that are shipped in to stage the protests. This weekend's in DC would be the exception.

I don't think the teabag groups hate the country, but rather, what the country has become. And I personally am unhappy and embarassed by it.

They sure conduct themselves better than the Wall Street Occupiers.

When liberty and privacy are dealth out dependng on your political affilation, like the IRS and NSA have been and are doing, you're no longer free.

Our economy is in shambles, our allies don't trust us and we are viewed as 'weak' on the world stage. We draw a red line and then move away from it. We allow four murders in Benghazi and nothing is done.

I deal with other countries daily and I hear first hand what their opinions are. They laugh at us.

No Annie, they are NOT laughing at you. That are laughing at Americans who were so easily duped by the socialist in chief in the white house. And how easily socialism has crept incrementally into the politic fabric of America. Gramsciism is indeed working as it has worked for decades now.
We shall see how far the American socialists are willing to go with their Gramsciism. I realise some are chomping at the bits, wanting to impose more oppresive Dzugashvili tactics but the string holders are holding them back. For Now!

so you agree most were lies?

even a few?

Obama was a drug dealer. What does Bush doing drugs, or Obama selling them so his were free, have anything to do with their service.

Just a reality check.....Bush Jr's first 5 years held recession, 9/11, war. Our unemployment was under 5%, and economy was growing at steady clip.

Obama's first 5 years.....recession. high unemployment, dollar losing value, credit of US downgraded, national debt doubled, unemployment higher than at any time under Bush, people requiring assistance rising at a record clip.

Don't you dare compare these 2 servicemen.

Barney the fag, and Chris Dodd created the meltdown by giving federal dollars by trainloads to people to buy homes who could not afford them. They are both on video outright lying to the President's face the status of lending and Freddie & Fannie. They sold us down the river and retired. Barney now wears a dog collar for his husband, and Chris Dodd has disappeared.

The economy that Obama was handed was crippled by Barney and friends. Barney & friends also were the congress that was in Democrat control Bush's last 2 years.

Thinking people saw the disfunction. When Obama was announced as candidate, the markets dropped and unemployment went through the roof. When elected business went into standby.

7 years has passed with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid driving the boat over the falls. 5 of those years they had help and not resistance. 2 of those years were unbridled power to pass Obamacare.

Remember Biden sound clip....this is a big Fing deal? Taking 1/3 of the entire nations economy under the power of Washington DC, and best is the IRS enforces one side, and death threats the other.

everything we are living today is because loons like you vote without reading the bill.

The government shutdown is saying NO.
