I see a rather significant difference between keeping an adequate stock of certain kinds of non-perishable food on hand for emergencies and stockpiling arms on the assumption that something bad WILL be coming and that when it does we all need to be prepared to kill our neighbors in order to survive, which is where this conversation began.
As far as what I believe about good ol days, well, it is axiomatic that whatever ol days one remembers, they were never as good in the living as they are in memory. Nonetheless, I do not believe that America's best days are done. Not only have we weathered economic crises in the past, but there has always been some economic cycling. I also believe that the choices that we make as a nation matter and that government policies do have a variety of impacts on both the economy as a whole, but also on the ability of individuals to succeed.
Please provide an example of when we were able to weather and overcome a $16.4 trillion dollar debt. Thank you.

I choose to protect myself against what I think are the most likely threats. No, I do not think a civil war is likely. More likely in my opinion is a disaster situation where the government will be overwhelmed and unable to help everybody who needed it in a timely manner.
Since I am rural, help will get here last, so I prepare to be able to be on my own for an extended period. Others will be not so prepared, and are likely to become desperate. THOSE are who I will have to defend my family against. And it behooves me to have equal or better protection than what they might have. I am not easily visible from any road, so odds are good I may never be found by anyone trying to harm me and never have to fire off a single shot. I truly hope that is the case, but I'm preparing in case it isn't. Just as I insure my home against fire... I'm not planning on having a fire, just planning for that case.
You seem to think that law-abiding gun owners WANT to kill someone... But that's YOUR thought, not mine, and you should examine yourself to discover why you think that way, not project it onto other people. Taking a life is one of the LAST things I want to do... but if it comes down to protecting my family, I will. There's nothing "uncivilized" about that.
I've been in the "holler" down in Waverly, Ohio and parts of Marysville, Ohio where you'll NEVER see an urban person wondering around someone's property. Hell, I'll bet everything I have that the 'type' of people you want to defend your property against wouldn't be able to find there way to a rural back road area if you gave them directions and a map to go with it!

Some of your fears about roaming bands of armed urbanites are unfounded and slightly paranoid. You have nothing to worry about from urban blacks venturing in your country road community! George has a false fear also about urbanites venturing beyond 270 West outer belt. Before any car loads of urbanites exit Roberts Rd or Rome Hilliard, the cops would have a road block and check point set up to protect the good white folks living in that area.

The only people who would suffer from home invasions during a natural disaster in an urban area are the blue collar people who have something worth stealing and need the AR-15 to protect their home. The rest of you paranoid people have no foundation to stand on when using the excuse of 'protecting' your homes from roaming bands of urbanites.

A year after the end of WWII the debt to GDP ratio was the highest it has ever been in the Nation's history.

We recovered just fine.

I think America back then had quite a large manufacturing based economy driven by a growing/thriving middle class built upon wages and benefits negotiated through collective bargaining.

I think things have changed a bit since then.

But yes, we'll eventually bounce back, even from the Bush debacle.

only for those that lack the skill sets.

history taught us that your above post is so sophomoric, that laughing at it is the only way to cope with the reality of how stupid some people are.

Do you remember in school where you were supposed to pay attention and learn something, that in the 1800's people traveled from east to west in a wagon full of canned goods and guns to build single room sod homes to raise families in?

are you not ecstatic that you were not one of the brave people who set out to find a new place to call home in a wagon..........you would have died with your lack of skill.

George was ok.

Andy Jackson was certainly a racist, thieving, thug though. I don't know how the heck he gets his filthy mug on the $20 bill, and TJ gets the $2.
