John McCain distanced himself from his "libertarian friends" Thursday by sticking up for not only a muscular foreign policy but for foreign aid and the United Nations as well.
Speaking at DC's Center for a New American Security, the former GOP presidential hopeful said that lately, "I feel I have more in common on foreign policy with President Obama than I do with some in my party." Criticizing fellow Republicans who backed Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul's drone filibuster last month - colleagues McCain says should "know better" - the Arizona senator lambasted Paul's focus on the "theoretical possibility that the president would use a drone to kill Americans."
McCain further claimed that it was foolilsh to back the slashing of foreign aid to regimes like Egypt or some other "critical country," an argument made not due to a sense of humanitarian do-gooding, but rather national self-interest:
"While foreign aid might not make its recipients love us," he stated, "it does further our national security interests and values."
"The far left and far right in America are coming together in favor of pulling us back from the world," said McCain, who added that he didn't envy the responsibility placed on President Obama to handle global affairs.
