Just getting married before you get pregnant would be a good start. Then staying married and rearing your children would help. I wonder how American pioneers made it in the wilderness without all the tax-payer-funded Social Programs to TEACH THEM TO FRICKIN' COOK? This is really, really getting annoying. Give them a house, give them a phone, give them public education (which they don't bother to use), buy their food and supply them with somebody (paid by taxes) to teach them how to cook the food you gave them already, pay for their medical care, pay for their mental problems, pay their utilities, now pay for the homosexual partners of those with government jobs. The native Americans would have had nothing to fear if the people who first came to this country had been as shiftless as the ones who inhabit it nowadays. But, hey, it's just all part of the plan to wreck tis country and merge it into global government.

Better health for the neighborhood should begin by eliminating the frequent lead poisonings that occur on North Fourth St.

One can't help but wonder if the young woman written about in this story, the pregnant one with diabetes who already has two kids who were premature and spent a long time in the hospital, is there a husband in this picture? The article didn't mention any. Things being the way they are one tends to assume this person is soon to be the unwed mother of three and is being sustained by the heavily-burdened taxpayer. Not the sort of story to warm your heart this morning.

Julius Jefferson should do some surveying about why he and his bros. can't seem to follow the rules and can't marry their girlfriends, like Krystle Holland, before they impregnate them.
Oh where have you been Billy boy, Billy boy
Oh where have you been, charming Billy?
I have been to seek a wife...
Can she bake a cherry pie, Billy boy, Billy boy?
Nah, she can't bake a cherry pie. Can't bake a pot of beans either.
But the Social Worker is trying to teach her.
Before the baby comes.

Many of us manage to not have more children than we can afford, while working full time with chronic illnesses that are managed properly. So very tired of the excuses and the expectations that if you live in the 'wrong' neighborhood, you can't think for yourself or make responsible choices. Who is paying for all this medical care while young women with diabetes complications continue to procreate? And then they blame the oldsters for rising health costs. Give me a break!

Enough already with the single mother, no husband/father around EVER, no job, no education. Apparently, we the taxpayer - the working responsible adults - are supposed to pay for bad decisions made by people who know nothing of birth control, let alone how to HEAT A CAN OF BAKED BEANS WITHOUT HELP! How did it get to this? Good Lord, you can't do that, and yet you have a child that you STILL cannot care for going forward? Adopting or fostering a child requires so much social worker oversight and rule-following, yet this goes on with birth mothers. It's ridiculous.

We're tired of paying for everyone who pops out babies, for everything thereafter, forever. DONE WITH IT. Have children only when you have a plan, job, education, and have your financial house in order. Do it only when you can actually afford it, and can do more than heat a can of baked beans. Just seething over this....

Imagine what the children of this neighborhood do when they get to school. The boys are especially difficult as they have been raised to think that they can do whatever they want: father umpteen children without responsibility, take whatever they want from stores, assault anyone who denies them, etc. Teachers have been charged with making them into college-bound scholars! It is an amazing experience to have a child arrive in kindergarten who does not even know their own name.

I hate these people. I live in Italian Village and driving through Weinland Park makes me insanely mad every time. As previous posts mention, pretty much all of them are on all the smorgasbord of welfare programs they we all pay for yet they still manage to do nothing but loiter on their porches and cause problems. I'm sick of all the crime that spills over into our neighborhoods. If you think I'm just another right wing nutcase, become "friends" on facebook with the Italian Village Blockwatch. Almost without exception, all the posts involve young black males from Weinland Park or the section 8 housing in Italian Village. The only way to truly re-make the short north and university area into something more than just an entertainment district must involve getting rid of this element rather than just throwing more money at them.

I think the real help would come from teaching these women to keep their legs closed until they maybe made a better life for themselves. Stop breeding while you are poor!!!

More and more of the unintended consequences of the civil rights acts (The Great Society) brought on by LBJ 45 years ago are now slamming down full force on those they were supposed to help....All the stop gap measures mentioned in this article will not stem the tide of this catastrophic effort at social engineering. It is all just dancing around the real problem.

As much as I hate welfare, and the people who sponge off the system, I'd be all for giving welfare women an extra few bucks in benefits each month if they were on long term birth control. God knows they're not going to keep their legs shut, so we may as well have a plan B.

I am the reporter who wrote this story. There are, undeniably, many problems in the Weinland Park community. There also are many residents -- such as the women in this story -- who want better for themselves and their neighborhood. That is the point of the larger investment in Weinland Park and also the point of intimate efforts such as the prenatal education classes. Change is needed. And no one is saying that personal responsibility doesn't matter, because obviously it does. But it is possible to discuss social issues respectfully. As for the women, it takes courage to appear in a newspaper story and publicly discuss personal challenges. Such efforts need not be met with anonymous and hurtful comments on Thanksgiving morning.

I see the ugly head of racism and bigotry is alive and well in Italian Village.

We should be encouraging these women to have abortions, at taxpayer expense if necessary. Make it as easy and convenient as possible, a drive-thru clinic at North Fourth St. and East Eleventh Ave. No questions asked. Illegal aliens welcome.

We hear so much about how bad it was when white people owned slaves in America, how the black people had to work all day for the white people. Well things sure have turned around. For several generations now the white people have to work all day for the black people. Have to supply all their needs and wants while they lay around and procreate. Sounds like reparations have already been going on for a long time so let's not hear any more about reparations. You done got 'em in SPADES (no pun intended).

They don't want it bad enough to stop having children they have no hope of supporting.

Well, Rita, glad you showed up. I must ask. If they want better for themselves why do they keep having illegitimate children that they can't pay for? We've done discussed and it ain't workin'. Who says it takes courage to flaunt your lifestyle? Lots of people crave attention. Look at Hollywood. Logical people want to know why you go out and get pregnant when you don't know how to cook a meal? Just how long should it take to teach people the basics of life? How many generations? How many billions of tax dollars?

That idea was around in the early 1990's...to implant, under the skin, a cylinder of Norplant. It is a long lasting (3 years) birth control delivery system and was to be used in any unmarried welfare mama after her first offspring.
