The fact remains that it's not the injury he received that's relevant, it's the injury he thought he prevented.
But the mere fact that he could have easily avoided any injury whatsoever by simply waiting for the police to arrive speaks volumes.
He instigated the interaction that undoubtedly cause Mr. Martin to fear for his own safety, and provided Mr. Martin the legal grounds to defend himself. Absent Mr. Zimmerman's own conduct, Mr. Zimmerman would have had no reason to fear anything whatsoever.
He can't escape those very salient facts. If he walks away with an acquittal, he will be one very lucky man.
