"WASHINGTON Millions of smokers could be priced out of health insurance because of tobacco penalties in President Barack Obama's health care law, according to experts who are just now teasing out the potential impact of a little-noted provision in the massive legislation.

The Affordable Care Act - "Obamacare" to its detractors - allows health insurers to charge smokers buying individual policies up to 50 percent higher premiums starting next Jan. 1."

I already pay higher premiums. When they start charging for obese people, I'll gladly pay as I puff away.

Premiums for smokers are already higher for health and life insurance.

What's funny about this is both the President and Speaker of the house smoke. Oh, but they will be excluded from Obamacare, right?
Wait what

I have to admit, I wondered about the poor folk who are obese AND smokers and wanted their "right" to free or low-cost health care. Guess that's coming back to bite them. I think obesity is next because I recall reading something that there will be some exclusions (some clinically obese people have good numbers). It may have been written out at some point or tabled for later consideration.

I already pay $462 monthly for single COBRA coverage. I'll just wander off into the desert of New Mexico if it goes any higher after subsidy ends.

Are they going to boot smokers off Medicaid? Doubtful.

Must be nice to be exempt from Obamacare being a smoker and all eh Obama?

Where its going to hit people in the wallet is the cost of supplemental coverage.

It won't be biting them, it will be biting the ones who'll be paying for it.

The taxpayer is already on the line for paying for healthcare of people who smoke, abuse alcohol and drugs, and eat horrible diets. It's called Medicaid. And a lot of the bad food they eat (candy, chips, soda, etc.) we pay for.

Such a great system.
