Jail time doesn't work for drug abuse unless it involves treatment, which it rarely does.

Why did central Ohio United Way end their longtime support for drug and alcohol treatment centers? No one is there to make up the funding and so there are fewer choices for judges.

It appears that this was a humbling experience for all involved. I believe that some jail time is appropriate - I believe that some time in the slammer will get the attention of the offender.

The father has tried. Particularly considering that he has spent his retirement money on her rehabilitation.

he can spend all the money in the world on this poor child but until she is ready to admit she has a problem and want help for her self nothing will work.

Raising kids is really easy. We all need to realize that all children are born with a sin nature. They need to go to church and Sunday school and come to invite Christ into their lives. He is the only person that can change a sinful heart. Correction officers will say the same thing. The amazing thing about the grace of God, is that it is free!!! It will not cost the taxpayers 1 dime. Why are we always treating the symptoms and not embracing the cure???

Your god doesn't exist and your religion is a fairytale. Its junk like this that prevents our society from moving forward.

It is truly amazing how these "law and order" staunch conservatives whistle a different tune when they face the real world with friends and relatives affected. Everyone on this planet faces difficult challenges and choices but it would seem that the advice of trying to walk in another persons shoes could be the best judicial advice these officials who see the world in black and white could follow. It could make them a bit more human.

While I feel for this young woman and her parents; it seems like probation for trafficking in herion seems light.

I agree about the sentencing. If it wasn't for the fact that her father is a judge, trust me the consequences would have been jail time!

There is as many drugs available in prison as on the streets. Go do some time and find out. It's amazing how naive the public is about the disease of addiction until they or their loved ones get it. It's like sending a cancer victim to jail to "cure" them.

The Bible says "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it." I am not talking about being religious, I am talking about a personal relationship with the living God. Maybe she has this now.

This was a normal sentence for a first time offender.

And, this girl did see jail time. She spent 38 days in jail before sentencing. That's longer than former Cleveland Browns receiver Donte Stallworth got in jail for killing a person while drunk.

Kudos to the judge for trying to make the community a better place.

At least this family's crisis is generating this kind of community discussion. All of the above comments are meaningful points to consider while we battle with the pandemic of addiction. It is almost impossible to find a single human being who isn't addicted to something, whether it's heroin or alcohol or prescriptions or caffeine or food or gambling or television or gossiping or the accumulation of money or texting or sex or internet blogging...
Finding ways to escape the hard, cold reality of simply being alive is such a pervasive problem that we don't even recognize it in all of its many disguises. All addictions are diversions from humankind's primary reponsibility of selflessly serving the needs of society as a whole. If we could all spend more time serving the needs of others, then perhaps life wouldn't be so painful, and we wouldn't need to expend so much energy in trying to escape it.
Just a thought...
