So mandatory substance abuse testing and required public service work for all folks that receive government hand outs then?
If it starts in the boardrooms on Wall Street and in the offices of every legislator in every statehouse and in Washington, as well as every single lobbyist, maybe I'd support that.

Otherwise...that's just insane.

I was just curious if your bud RU wanted to apply the standard he set for Catman across the spectrum of substance abusers wanting "hand outs".

It appears that given the right set of standards you might be on board with it.

There are 10 more organizations on this page alone.
A Google search pulls up many more.
I was trying to find a way to get the goods to Dave directly. If a shelter wouldn't mind being the go-between, that's fine with me but he'd have to set it up with them.

<quoted text>I will be ok for a while, but come February things may be different. But I sure appreciate the offer. That comment you made yesterday morning about doing nice things and so forth really hit home for me. I was reading that with my co worker sitting next to me, and he just looked at me and said "see a-hole, people are trying to be nice to you". I thought about that all day. Thank you.
You're welcome. Glad it inspired you a bit. I'm a huge fan of pay-it-forward. Be nice to someone and hopefully they'll be nice to someone else.

Don't draw the argument to illogical conclusions, Nate. I'm just pointing out that your "saint" who loves kitties and likes a drinkiepoo every now and then is nothing more than a classic manipulative alcoholic. I seem to be the only one who can see that.

Isn't one of the hallmarks of an abusive alcoholic that they will milk you with their sob stories until you give and give and give and give and it never does any good?
Someone's milking it here. Get off your ays and go to AA, you drunk. <- There. There's some real help for you. Now watch all the compassionate conservatives give me agita for it.
Not all alcoholics are abusive. Many are completely functional. I'm not an alcoholic or drug addict, but I would venture to say calling them a drunk and being mean to them probably won't help their state. With that said, anyone who has a problem does have the power to help themselves - they just have to want to do it. Most addictions have an underlying cause.

Without being mean, I see what you're talking about. But I just try to think the best of people and think that maybe he's a lonely guy who really is at his rope's end. I try hard not to judge others for their weaknesses and instead try to lift them up in spirit or whatever way I can. Life is already so hard and full of negativity - why add more to it? Why not be a helping hand instead of the hand that holds them down?

I think the same of some of the people on here who comment about low-income African Americans. Instead of judging and not giving them a fair shake, why not become a helping hand? If your hand is slapped, at least you tried your best.

So then, you are only willing to apply your standards with exclusivity to a single poster? That seems illogical.

How compassionately liberal of you yasser.

Actually that was very kind of you.

I was just trying to give him options.

From what I have read (and I have not followed every post) he seems to want to handle it himself and avoid charity.

Do you have Dollar Tree stores there, kiddo? I get bags of dry cat and dog food, 20 oz. for $1.00 each. That's what I feed the feral cats here with. And I never see any sign of a mouse. Dave's a good guy.
We do. I usually buy them out of their supplies and take it to a place here in Cbus. I try to do pet drives at work too. My last job I got people to donate a couple grand worth of supplies. Very nice! Do you keep feral cats in a barn?

Who exactly did I manipulate? I didn't take anything from anybody, and I hope I never have too. But that was very nice of M to offer. That kind of stuff means a lot to me. I said some bad things to her in the past, and it takes a lot of good in her to look past those things, forgive me, and do something like that. I'm sorry if you think I'm such a horrible person, but she apparently sees the truth.

Actually, the whole idea is ridiculous. That's the point.

Ever had any exposure to the drug testing field? Dip tests vs. confirmatory lab testing? False positives? Costs of administrating a DOT approved program? Costs of judicial appeals? Costs vs. so called "savings"?

If not, and you think that drug testing for "welfare recipients" (who are primarily under the age of 18) provides some sort of a workable solution to a "problem", you really haven't thought bery hard about the issue.

I know what you're saying, I am just so hideously sick and tired of the 'welfare way of life' and contributing to it my via taxes. And it surely is not confined to one racial group. It's a generational taught thing now. And really weakening the country. Look at Greece and France.
My first impulse, in my personal life, also is to throw $ at the problem, but that's wrong. It's not sending the right message and it's totally a 'stop gap' solution.
Now I have in the past, and will in the future, I'm sure, pay a bill or give someone $ that needs it. But I will not do it on a 'you'll pay me back' basis.
My dad used to say,'once you give someone $ it's none of your business what they do with it.' Very true.
You work hard, I work hard, i.e. everyone should work hard. Not work hard at not working.
And idle hands are the devil's workshop.:-)
You wouldn't believe the amount of work I got done today in just a few hours. It's not a picnic operating old heavy equipment, and I'm still breathing heavy a half an hour later. And I still have the flu. My boss is very happy with me right now.
