Wow, any person that could serve that many years in law enforcement and have only positive things said about him, must have been a good and honest man. Prayers and sympathy to his family.

"Workers from the Franklin County Public Facilities Management lowered the Franklin County flag in front of the new courthouse to half-mast to honor the death of Sheriff Karnes today."

Uhhh..."half-mast" is on a ship. Try "half-staff," and get an editor.

Jeeze...

Agree with all the posts. He will be greatly remembered. But, WOW, on the lighter side, I did not realize he was 71. God's Speed Sherriff Karnes.

my husband worked for sheriff karnes in the civil division and was a corp. Tim always had great respect for sheriff karnes and always contribited to his campaign and when Tim passed away, sheriff karnes was there to offer his condolences. My sincere sympathies and condolences to his wife and family. May he rest in peace.

Several winters back I ran into Sheriff Karnes when he came out of St Mary Magdalene's school probably after a DARE function. It happened to have been a particularly snowy couple of weeks and I was outside shoveling out the curb line from my house to the storm inlet several houses down the street to give the melting snow somewhere to go besides forming large, soon to be frozen, puddles in the street. I was busily working away and was surprised to hear the sound of applause. I looked up and turned around and there was Sheriff Karnes clapping at my efforts to get the water moving. When he realised that it was a woman digging out, he quipped that some of the guys should be doing this instead, but thanked me for my work.

He was always the most gracious of guys the couple of other times I had met him.

Family is more than blood, and the Law Enforcement family is huge. Rarely does one earn and deserve the respect that Sheriff Karnes did.

Jim Karnes cared about people he didn't even know personally. Once I had a problem with an accident report and my husband was called back to his booth at Tommy's Diner to report what had happened. Within 2 hours, our phone rang at home. Who was on the other end? Jim Karnes himself. He had the corrected accident report and when I offered to have him fax it to me, he said to me, "No, I cannot do that. I am having an officer deliver it to you." That is exceptional customer service and done with such kindness and professionalism! My favorite memory of him is sitting across the aisle from his lunch at Tommy's Diner on St. Patrick's Day with his little grandson and wife joining him. The love for his little grandson was obvious and sweet to watch.

While you are technically correct, now is not the time to be a bag o' douche, Shipwreck. Not the time.
