American taxpayers could wind up losing as much as $25 billion on the 2008 – 2009 automotive bailout, according to a new report, a figure that has increased by 15% since an earlier forecast, in large part representing the significant downturn in General Motors’ stock price.
Beginning with the outgoing Bush Administration in 2008 and continuing once Pres. Barack Obama took office the following year, the U.S. Treasury invested $85 billion to help the domestic industry survive the deep recession – primarily to fund the post-bankruptcy turnarounds at GM and Chrysler.
But, in a report sent to Congress, the White House raised to $25.1 billion the amount it said it cannot now expect to recover – primarily by selling off the remaining 26% stake it still holds in GM. The previous quarterly estimate was $21.7 billion. On the other hand, the latest figure is about 45% less than the $44 billion the Obama Administration had once predicted.
The forecast has actually been rising for some months, government analysts last year issuing a projection closer to $15 billion. And, following the November 2010 GM IPO, there was some hope the Treasury might even break even. That was based on some industry research, such as one report from influential Deutsche Bank that initially forecast GM shares could eventually top $50 compared to the IPO strike price of $33.
But, in recent months, automotive shares in general, GM in particular, have been tumbling. The $25 billion government loss forecast was based on a stock price of $22.20 at the end of May. During the last month, however, the number has dipped to less than $19 a share, though the stock has since rebounded to $20.61 at midday today.
GM sold off more than half the shares held by American taxpayers during the 2010 IPO but the Treasury is still the maker’s biggest stockholder at 26%— or 500 million shares. GM’s stock price would need to jump to $53 for the government to break even.

Now, care to address how the bondholders were totally screwed out of every last dime?
I'll put it to you this way, the numbers that's floating around are just numbers on a computer screen. They're an illusion! No one is getting $500 million dollars in cash or gold delivered! At a push of a button, swoosh... it's all gone! Numbers are being juggled, Ron Paul is on to it. We work, and to get paid we are given numbers in our accounts. If I walked into the bank and asked for gold equal to what's in my account, I'd probably be escorted out by security. We are living in an artificial Matrix.

CEO's have gotten $200,000,000 worth of raises and bonuses since the Bush tax cuts. Corporate profits are at 50 year all-time highs! Don't you get it man! The Reagan ideology is only working well for the top! Even small businesses under 100 employees are not prospering under the Bush tax plan. You've been handed a load of bull by the right man. What Led to Obama getting reelected?

George W. Bush.

The President continues to repair the Mess George W. Bush left behind. The voters didn't want to go back to those dark old days like we saw under the leadership of one of America's worst Presidents.

Mitt Romney Fliped/Flopped, lied, and the people knew he was as phony as those blue jeans he put on. He would have only been working for the rich of the Republican Party. I think he would have been scared of the responsibility of being President. Anyway I am glad we didn't vote that phony into the White House. No damn war monger President for four years. Way to go Obama, lead us until we can elect another Democrat in 2016. Now we need to defeat Mitch McConnell, he needs to be booted out.

listen to your union goon.

go on strike and get fired.

19,000 Hostess employees this morning are learning how well their strike turned out for them.

brilliant.

no 1 penny of assistance to any of them should be demanded.

They deliberately ended their job, so no benefits for accomplishing just that.

because they were stupid enough to listen to the union goon, they can collect benefits from the union.

The taxpayer had nothing to do with 19,000 essentially quitting.

everyone who voted for Obama was promised ice cream and ding dongs.

paying back is difficult when the bakery shuts down.

19,000 lose job permanently; and added to unemployment

and rest of world is waiting for the ice cream

sure glad Hostess did not make ice cream.

I am allergic to wheat, so I could not eat ding dongs anyway.

Obama won because more people voted for him. The people on these forums talk nothing but hate and have used the word hate in your posts. There is nothing wrong w/ the rich paying their fair share. That is not hate against the rich. They will still be rich. Until you haters see the light you will always be losers. You right slingers make terrible remarks about females, blacks, gays and other groups of people. As long as you keep pursecuting people you will remain the minority. So now everyone is a minority. How does it feel? Until you see our country as a whole, your group will become smaller and smaller. Think about how you feel towards these minorities and it will be karma on you and you will become hated. There will be another generation coming of age to vote in 4 yrs and they will be even more diverse, this is why the Repubs have to change their thinking. Fox news lied to all you Repubs and will continue to lie. So if you like being lied to go ahead and believe what they say and you will continue to be wrong. Your ideologies have bit the dust and are slowly fading away.
I typically vote conservative.

I am for gay marriage. Always have been.

I'm all for everyone paying their fair share in taxes. That includes those on Medicaid and welfare. How do those who don't have an income pay taxes? Simple. You all scream that those on welfare and Medicaid pay sales tax (yeah with money they get from taxpayers) so they are paying some taxes then by your own acknowledgment.

So this is what I propose.
1. If you receive Medicaid or welfare you do not qualify for any tax refunds at the end of the year. No EIC. You pay no taxes at the end of the year but you receive no refund. We need to revamp the system so no one can receive more in a refund than they pay in.

2. If you all want socialized healthcare then we all have to pay our fair share. Including those who will use it. So everyone should get 15% less per check including welfare. Who is ready to pay an extra 15% in taxes each paycheck for their "free" healthcare? I'm guessing most of you would be against that. You all like free stuff well free for you and you couldn't care who has to pick up the tab.

I vote conservative because it's a party that preaches self-responsibility. Democrats always seem to want to give stuff away and pass the bill on to others.

Get you a loan from the "private market" and find a building then "pull yourself up" by your own bootstraps! Don't accept any "commie" government medicare payments either! Cash money or gold only. You people are a freaking joke! Also, bipartisan doesn't mean pass everything the other side wants. That's not bipartisan!
I love the VA. So ill stay. Sorry cupcake you can't do jack about it.

I despise the victim class. Veterans aren't victims. They earned their healthcare through military service.
