Could Mount Rushmore One Day Bear Barack Obama's Face?

Mount Rushmore National Memorial, near Keystone, South Dakota, is the monumental sculpture that represents the first 150 years of the history of the U.S. with 60-foot sculptures of the heads of pivotal U.S. presidents. Ranging from George Washington to Theodore Roosevelt, each president in the sculpture represents a transitional time in U.S. history, after which, America would never be the same again. Albeit early in his presidency, doesn't President Barack Obama already represent a pivotal moment in U.S. time. America, the country whose constitution and Bill of Rights seem paradoxically written by slave owners. The country who sent men to fight wars for democracy, while not having the right to vote in their own hometowns. After, over 200 years of racial history, the election of President Barack Obama is definitely monumental!

Now, we're not requesting that President Barack Obama join the ranks of those four presidents prematurely, we're just wondering whether or not it warrants exploring. Even Obama himself turned the idea of his face being up there with the rest of the presidents:

Obama was asked if he'd like to see his face on the mountain with Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt.

"I dont think my ears would fit," Obama said, laughing. "There's only so much rock up there."

If it does happen it better occur before the Bank of islam, located in his adopted country, puts his picture of him wearing a doo rag on their currency. Might be kinda hard to reconcile the two.

It will happen bout the time of year it snows in hell. His ears aren't the problem. There IS NOT enough rock to fully capture his inflated sense of himself.

If he's a one term president, no. However, if he gets re-elected and somehow manages to get the economy and unemployment solved. Is able to guide the Middle-East to peace and peacefully get Iran to stop it's nuclear weapons research then he stands a chance.

Shanikwah, it'll snow in hell first, in other words.

West Virginia coal country would be a far better option for carving out an image of Obama. The soft coal is easier to chisel and it's the correct color.

I don't know about Mt. Rushmore, maybe have his face tattooed
as Reader's tramp-stamp.

So it's that bad...You actually seen Reader. What was the vision? A tattoo of a raisin on cracked leather?

Mt. Rushmore needs to be blown up. It's the most boring thing to look at in the Black Hills. The four men portrayed are certainly great, but to go and look at that ceases to be interesting after 10 minutes. And the Park Service managed to turn the Visitor Center from something that complemented nature into something that Albert Speer would have admired. Not to mention the construction of two parking garages, out in BFE.

Blast the faces off, smooth it into a flat vertical surface, and show an IMAX movie about the history of our country on it. THEN you would have something. And change the movie regularly. Then the whole experience would have the complete tackiness that American and world tourists love.

I wasn't taking a jab at her looks with that statement. It was meant as a general statement. Tramp stamps, icky.

Interstate 90 in South Dakota is closed because they are moving a 400 ton hunk of coal so they can put Obama in Mt. Rushmore.

That's a needless waste of 799,999 pounds and 15 ounces of coal because he's only worth an ounce.

Possibly not the best comment to make in a public forum considering how Big Brother reads and hears all in today's post-9/11 world. Mt. Rushmore IS considered as a high profile terrorist target due to its symbolic status along with the St. Louis Arch, the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument.

I just want to make it clear that I don't want to have Mt. Rushmore "blown up". What I wrote yesterday was stupid and offensive, and I retract it entirely. I apologize to anyone who read my original post and to anyone who will read it.

When my family visited in '97, we were shocked and taken aback by all the changes that had taken place since our earlier visit in '89. I thought the new visitor center and parking garages were an assault upon the natural setting, and I don't think I will ever go back. Now that I've had a chance to sleep on it, this posting (and see below) is truly how I feel about the place.

However, to those who have never been, this is what will be the normal appearance. I believe Mt. Rushmore is something everyone should see in their life, just understand that it will only take about 1-2 hours to experience it. It is a stunning large rock sculpture, especially with clear skies. I think the people in charge could do some more to make the whole experience more interesting, and maybe they have, as I said I have not been there in 15 years.

Again my apologies for an incredibly stupid and offensive post.

One postscript in relation to the thread, I seem to recall there was a movement to put Reagan on Mt. Rushmore also. My personal opinion is that since it's been this way for so long, it should not be added to. It also takes a fair amount of maintenance on the four faces that are there now, so adding a face would add to that.

Tell me when this thread is updated:
