Well, I, for one, wouldn't be surprised to see him leave, with the Tressel scandal shrouding and sullying the rest of the athletic department being a tipping point. Duke and North Carolina will be looking for new coaches soon enough, and Matta would be one of the top possible replacements. It's a business, and we should never forget that. Until The Ohio State University basketball has a feel to it like the aforementioned schools et al, Matta's leaving is always a very real possibility. And we will then be left wondering what could have been.

I think that the fact that he says he thought he would be at Butler and Xavier for a long time too(but left after short tenures at each) kind of leaves the door open that he could leave OSU at some point. But I don't think that possibility is imminent. He has a good gig at OSU. I think he is at OSU for several more years. Plus, his oldest daughter is getting to the teen years where it becomes a bit harder to just uproot and move. But he might not take that kind of thing into much consideration.

As for the Duke coaching vacancy which will be open in the not-too-distant future, Matta will never get that opportunity. Recruiting is totally different at Duke. A name being thrown around as a desired candidate is Brad Stevens of Butler. Roy Williams does not appear to be looking at retirement any time soon and UNC is going to be loaded for the next few years. I just don't see Matta going to either of those schools as suggested by a previous post.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes are lucky to find such a great Basketball Coach in Thad Matta . The Dept of Athletics at Ohio State is the largest in the Country and most of it's support comes the Football team and HC Jim Tressel and the Men's Basketball team and HC Thad Matta who both know how to win the big games and bring in the revenue needed to keep 36 Div I sports with 17 or 18 being women's sports that produce very little revenue . Go Tressel and Matta and the Buckeyes !

Duke and UNC are hardly "second world". Ohio State is a step behind both in terms of basketball. I have not seen Ohio State winning any national championships lately and in the past decade, Duke and UNC each won 2 (Duke 2001, 2010; UNC 2005, 2009).

I had my worries about Matta in the beginning with the way he left Xavier but since then he has been pure gold. His heart does seem to be in the right place with his players.

Even in Tressel's first couple years you could see the seeds of player problems and cover-ups. After 7 years, so far, so good with Matta's players. Let's hope they weren't the ones driving around in 2010 model cars for a $5 price tag.

I think Coach Tressel has done a Helluva good job too.

Theres a BIG difference between monitoring 15 players to 80.

Once criticized for being a job-jumper by some for leaving Butler after one year as coach and Xavier after three, Matta says Columbus has become a reasonable facsimile for home

Not a ringing endorsement of this fair city.

In hoops terms, your're right. But the article was about Matta's fit in Columbus, and Chapel Hill and Durham are quasi-third world communities (just ask Jon Tenuta who absoluitely hated Chapel Hill). They have extremely poor education systems for the kids; public schools in Cols. burbs are better than the private schools! "Normal" middle class people are rare with large amounts of poverty separated by gates from the super affluent. These are not "real" cities and most normal midwestern people are not comfortable nor do they fit in there. Raleigh is reasonably better but NC State is no step up. Also true, tOSU is not yet a destination job for hoops, but I put them with Texas as programs that are getting there. I think of Arizona as a newly-founded destination program to go with UNC, Duke, Kansas, KY, UCLA, G-town,'Cuse,and IU.

As for Matta, the article pinned one of his best attributes. He has short memory syndrome which allows his best players to make some mistakes while going for the gusto. He is an amazing blend of being "player-friendly" coupled with disciplined.

I'm also glad to hear Matta's not over the final game yet; nor am I. This was about as painful as the loss to UCLA in 1980 (still love ya Kelvin) and the scUM loss in 1992. Really am already missing Diebs, David and Dallas.

Hope Matta stays a long time at OSU! His 2010-2011 and 2006-2007 teams were two of the best in OSU history. Sometimes I wonder about his game decisions, like playing two many guards and not putting enough big guys under the basket (they may have beaten Kentucky if Dallas had played more), but, overall, he has done one heck of a job!
