The East Broad Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road light will be a money maker. The renters have no idea that a red light means STOP.

Simple solution is don't run a red light and you won't get a ticket.

Looks to me as if Coleman only cares about his precious downtown area and not the rest of the city. He loves to talk about getting people to come downtown and then he puts in cameras to keep people away.

Red light cameras should not discourage you from visiting downtown. They should encourgae you to obey the law.

I notice that Columbus Commons is well-'protected' with ticket cameras. It's all part of Mayor Coleman's grand scheme. Come on downtown, suckers!

Ohio
The Ohio House of Representatives voted 72-23 to approve a bill by state Representative Jim Raussen (R-Springdale) today that would effectively prohibit the use of red light cameras and speed cameras in the state. Raussen's legislation would only allow the devices to be used when a police officer is present to witness the offense and issue the citation to the driver.
The House also voted 92-4 to add a provision standardizing yellow signal timing to the ITE recommendations. The amendment's sponsor, Rep. Shawn Webster, cited the Texas Transportation Institute study showing longer yellow times decreased accidents.
Raussen argued that the photo enforcement represented, "a program that at best has questionable results." He cited cases in Ohio where individuals had improperly received tickets for offenses they did not commit as well as studies which show red light camera use actually increased the number of accidents where they were used.
Rep. Peter Ujvagi (D-Toledo) agreed that some abuses have happened, but "we should not punish those communities that are doing the right thing." He cited evidence from the Toledo police showing a reduction in violations where the cameras were used.
The cities of Dayton, Middletown, Northwood, Sylvania Township, and Toledo currently use red light cameras. Northwood also uses speed cameras.

"City officials say the cameras save lives by preventing crashes at dangerous locations. The cameras have brought in almost $3 million in revenue to the city, including more than $300,000 in the first five months of 2011, Speaks said. Twenty red-light cameras are at 18 intersections, half of which are Downtown. The city wants to double the number of cameras, said Amanda Ford, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety.
Two new cameras are expected to be working on Wednesday: at E. Livingston Avenue and S. Yearling Road, and at E. Broad Street and Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road, Speaks said. Violators will receive warnings for 30 days before tickets are issued. Under a contract with Redflex Traffic Systems, the company that installs and maintains the cameras, the city will receive 62 percent of revenue from cameras set up before 2010 and 55percent from cameras established after that. Redflex gets the rest."

This is ALL ABOUT REVENUE-Not Safety!!
IF this were about Safety these cameras would be at the "Top 20 Most Dangerous Intersections in Columbus" as documented by ODOT. They are NOT! The intersections are selected by Redflex as to their highest possible REVENUE PRODUCING intersections.

Agreed, it's aboutbrevenue streams, not safety. Red light cameras only make things safer if you know they are there, which most people don't. Studies have proven time and again that having a longer yellow light does far more to increase safety than red light cameras, but it's not as profitable for the city so they won't do it. So we get this mess isntead. Take notes people, this is what happens when you outsource critical government finctions to private companies with a profit motive. There have been numerous stories where these cameras have been in placed, and after a while people avoid those intersections because of them. So revenue drops, and then the cities actually start shortening yellow light times to cause more people to run red lights so that they can recoup lost revenue. This has happened before and it will happen again.

The fines are civil. No consequence to your driving record. No possible criminal penalty for not paying. Unpaid fines go to collections, but you don't have and have never had a credit agreement with the city, therefore, any threat to your credit rating by a collector is misleading and likely illegal. If I get one, it is going straight to the recycle bin.
