Not all Blacks came to America as slaves. Some were indentured servants and became rich. One such Black, Anthony Johnson owned a large planation and Black slaves himself. However the liberals would never make a movie about a strong, independent Black Man like him.

The movie is based on the actual writing of Solomon Northup but twisted to make the Whites look worse than what Northup describes in his narrative of the story. Of all the stories of free Blacks his case is the rare exception. Many of the free Blacks were very successful despite the adversity they faced.

Whites were pretty understanding of minority rights and values back then. I don't know why the movie made those poor whites look so mean.

The fact remains that very few Blacks went back to Africa. If the circumstances were as bad as portrayed in these movies, far more Blacks would have left America which means conditions in America, while not perfect, where the best in the entire world for Blacks.

How was a poor, broke and uneducated slave supposed to make it back to Africa? Use their credit card? Borrow a cruise ship? Ask the former slave owners to lend them a few bucks for a ticket?

Christian groups, especially Quakers, paid for Blacks to return to Africa and a total of about 13,000 made the trip.

Historical fact and fiction are often times at odds in any Hollywood movie. However, 12 Years A Slave is a very good portrayal of the economic conditions of blacks living in the North and the South during the pre and post Civil War era. It is true that some Blacks living in the North were not enslaved and made their living either working in business for themselves or for someone else, earning wages in a similar manner as their White counterparts. However, there was only one form of employment for Southern Blacks and that was forced labor or slavery. Housing, food, personal safety, education, family relationships and many other "Human Rights" were denied Souther Blacks on an enormous scale and the movie provides a glimpse into those strenuous times in our countries history. I commend the Academy for recognizing the artistic value and historical truths portrayed in the movie. Every American should see the movie to perhaps gain a better perspective of our nations history.
