LOS ANGELES (AP) An Israeli filmmaker based in California went into hiding after his movie attacking Islam's prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on U.S. missions in Egypt and Libya, where the U.S. ambassador was killed, along with three American members of his staff.

Speaking by phone Tuesday from an undisclosed location, writer and director Sam Bacile remained defiant, saying Islam is a cancer and that the 56-year-old intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

Protesters angered over Bacile's film opened fire on and burned down the U.S. consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi. Libyan officials said Wednesday that Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed Tuesday night when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob firing machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

In Egypt, protesters scaled the walls of the U.S. embassy in Cairo and replaced an American flag with an Islamic banner.

"This is a political movie," said Bacile. "The U.S. lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're fighting with ideas."

Bacile, a California real estate developer who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew, said he believes the movie will help his native land by exposing Islam's flaws to the world.

"Islam is a cancer, period," he said repeatedly, his solemn voice thickly accented.

The two-hour movie, "Innocence of Muslims," cost $5 million to make and was financed with the help of more than 100 Jewish donors, said Bacile, who wrote and directed it.

The film claims Muhammad was a fraud. An English-language 13-minute trailer on YouTube shows an amateur cast performing a wooden dialogue of insults disguised as revelations about Muhammad, whose obedient followers are presented as a cadre of goons.

It depicts Muhammad as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse, among other overtly insulting claims that have caused outrage.

Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any manner, let alone insult the prophet. A Danish newspaper's 2005 publication of 12 caricatures of the prophet triggered riots in many Muslim countries.

Though Bacile was apologetic about the American who was killed as a result of the outrage over his film, he blamed lax embassy security and the perpetrators of the violence.

"I feel the security system (at the embassies) is no good," said Bacile. "America should do something to change it."

A consultant on the film, Steve Klein, said the filmmaker is concerned for family members who live in Egypt. Bacile declined to confirm.

Klein said he vowed to help Bacile make the movie but warned him that "you're going to be the next Theo van Gogh." Van Gogh was a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004 after making a film that was perceived as insulting to Islam.

"We went into this knowing this was probably going to happen," Klein said.

Bacile's film was dubbed into Egyptian Arabic by someone he doesn't know, but he speaks enough Arabic to confirm that the translation is accurate. It was made in three months in the summer of 2011, with 59 actors and about 45 people behind the camera.

The full film has been shown once, to a mostly empty theater in Hollywood earlier this year, said Bacile.

I am certain that there are some Americans with dead family members who might be questioning the value of his "provocation."

The Muslims used to same excuse to kill 139 people in the Jyllands Posten Muhammad Cartoon Riots and to murder Theo Van Gogh over the movie "Submission." Muslims are savages, Islam is cancer and people like you need to stop making excuses of Islamic supremecy. If you don't obey Sharia Law the Quran gives these people the right to do whatever they want to someone who "offends" them.

I guarantee she was just fine with Serrano's "Piss Christ." No doubt she thought the peaceful Christian protests were uncalled for and narrow minded.

This film-maker needs to go back to Israel. A fine way to give back to the country who allows him to live here.

With friends like him, who needs enemies?

The film-maker needs to accept responsibility for what he is responsible for.

If he made a film deliberately to provoke--as he said--then congratulations, he provoked.

That is not an endorsement of the killers.

In fact, I don't believe that the killers even have the endorsement of the group that actually organized the protest.

The film-maker, by the way, is blaming embassy security. You are supportive of this? Or maybe everything doesn't always come so neatly packaged as you would prefer.

It is now being reported that the little-known film is unrelated to Muslims' coordination of these attacks for 9/11.

It is most interesting to note that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo issued an apology for the little-known film PRIOR to these violent attacks. One might reasonably conclude that the Obama administration had prior knowledge of the planned attacks, and actively worked to deflect attention from Muslims' unhappiness with Obama by diverting it to an unknown, first-time movie producer.

And now...Obama's surrogates attempt to blame Terry Jones for his comments of several months ago.

Very, very interesting.
And not in a good way.

By your logic, abortionists need to realize that they're responsible for abortion clinic bombings.

Well yeah, in a way I would to a certain point blame embassy security for allowing the crisis to expand.....

If you are going to put a embassy in someplace like libya, you need to be prepared to protect the staff.

50 of 100 well armed marines, not hindered by any "rules of engagement" could have prevented this from happening.

A lot of your buddies would be laying dead in the street, however they would be less likely to try this sort of crap again.
If we had killed a couple hundred of the bast**ds in egypt as well
it would have went a long way towards preventing future embassy attacks there also.

Lastly, not matter what bs you spew skimmer, toleration of muslim violence and fear of reprisal if they get their feelings hurt is not acceptable.

That filmmaker was a coward. It said he was Israeli Jew. If he had made and released his film in Israel, he knew Israel would have been attacked, forcing another Mid-East war. But no, he released it here, KNOWING that that sort of thing inflames the Muslim radicals, and we pay the price.

Ship his butt back. Now.

Don't provoke the Muslims until you are willing...and ABLE...to take them all out once and for all. Unless you can fulfill those conditions, STFU.

Because if movie producers didn't produce anti-Islam movies, if cartoonists didn't create Muhammad cartoons, and if U.S. soldiers didn't dispose of terrorist-desecrated Qurans...then Muslims would never kill Americans.

You're a first-class idiot.

Earth to tip.

I wouldn't call the President's statement prior to the attacks (in response to demonstrations) an apology. He made clear that the US government does not endorse the views expressed, reiterating that the US believes (officially) in respect for religious viewpoints.

Now, apparently the group in Libya who launched the attack used the protest as a deliberate cover. This made it look to all the world that the attacks were a part of the protests. There was also an initial lack of information with regard to the film and the film-maker. Early reports found that Terry Jones has been associated with showing the film and scheduled an anti-Islam event (more provocation) for his 9 11 celebration.

All of this confusion is good reason for a measured response that takes time to understand what is happening before going off half-cocked, and particularly in using the incident for political gain within this country.

But, you cannot go around demanding immediate action at the same time you want complete accuracy. The truth is never as simple as you want it to be.

Attacking an embassay and killing an ambassador is a clear act of war. Muslims were seen carrying the body of the ambassador in celebration just like the Somalis dragged the bodies of our soldiers through the streets of Mogidishu.

It is time for action against the Governments who allowed these attacks. Obama has already said he will not defend America from a nuclear attack on American soil and this is another example of Obama violating his oath of office as (so called) Commander in Chief.

Acts of war were committed on September 11th and those acts cannot be ignored by cowardly and traitorous liberals and progressives.
