Spook, you continue to crack me up.

I can't speak for the EPA, been YEARS since I've had anything to do with them (back in the 80s, and with wastewater treatment mandates). But I sometimes see "entitlement" mentality. And federal workers do have a lot of job security.

You're right in that there is really no overall general damage. When it happened back in the 90s, the payroll taxes seemed to have caught up with the backpay for those on the federal payroll.
No real long-term damage other than it's possible to see regional unemployment spikes, particularly in areas like Dayton. The intent, as I see it, is to actually SHRINK the federal workforce.(And I don't disagree with that...there is much redundancy and stovepiping as I see it, but that is just my opinion.) I am willing to bet too that workforce shrinkage to happen through attrition and early retirement. Federal workers -- those on direct federal payroll -- have actually much more job security than anyone in the private sector. A contractor can be cut, funding can be removed, etc.
Federal workers are actually quite lucky if they would only sit down and think about it. Had they been in the private sector in 08, they may have been on unemployment. A 20% pay cut for six months hurts, but it's better than a kick in the ass back out into the streets. And they have way better benefits than most. If a contract gets cut, contractors have one of two things happen:
Aw crap, not sure what happened.

but the two things that happen:

1) contractor off site, not being paid any longer
2) contractor sent back to corporate, and re-assigned

It depends upon who they work for, if they want to move, several variables.

So many direct federal workers operate with a huge sense of entitlement. You only have to spend a little time in the DC burbs in Maryland and Virginia to see that these folks live in some sort of alternate universe. One of my brothers in law was like that, then went to work for the private sector a decade ago. Did he ever experience culture shock after 15 years of federal employment starting right out of college.

Yeah...I sorta had some culture shock when moving into defense. It's strange going from private sector to federal, even as a contractor.

I love what I do. I'm just not so thrilled with the environment I'm in sometimes. The company I work for, good. But it takes nerves of steel some days...

Defund schools by one day OR Internet school. Maybe govt. funded schools should only provide online education for K-1. Seriously, why should taxpayers have to pay to teach kids their colors, how to count and read? This is a parent's responsiblity. Taxpayers should quit spending their money to babysit. Parents should also pay for bus service, not taxpayers. Think of the money we could save if the govt. quit giving hand outs to lazy and irresponsible parents.

At the present, there are few classes, if any, that can be taken that would enable the student to progress through school beginning in Kindergarten via online learning. Most parents are taking the easy way by letting taxpayer funded buses pick up and drop off their children so they get free babysitting to do what they want. They may not even be home when their kids are dropped off. Govt. funded education isn't working and it's breaking the bank for taxpayers.

Billions of dollars are wasted and yet taxpayers are fooled into thinking education is money well spent. We want an educated people and yet with all the money we spend, our people are not that well educated. It's time to take the pressure off the taxpayer and put it where it belongs-the parents.

Odumma wants this sequester to pressure Republicans into going along with their schemes and I surely hope they will not break under this kind of pressure. Democrats can decide to make these cuts where they want so if they want to weaken the defense and strengthen welfare programs, it's their doing. They can only blame themselves. Panetta had no clue how to manage the DOD and the new guy will be even less qualified. The western part of the country will be the most vulnerable during these unstable times. Huge mistake for the safety of this country but then again, it's what oscumma wants.

When the economy continues to tank, dems can only blame themselves because THEY are creating uncertainty and it's been that way ever since the scumbag took office. The Moron in Chief wants to raise more taxes, burden small business with more costly paperwork and regulations and punish the hardworking by closing some of the few tax shelters they have left. There are businesses closing their doors because they can't pay theirTAXES!!!!!! Unbelievable.

Odumma refuses to compromise. He wants to continue to lie and do what he wants but eventually it will catch up swith him. Even some of the democrats are realizing obamacare is a problem. They are finding people are NOT getting to keep their health care and the IRS is going to cause obamacare to be unworkable. Health insurance has made historical increases since odumma began his socialized medicine push. The scum in chief wants to grow big government which is why we are in this sequester. He doesn't want to make real cuts so he will make all of us suffer if he doesn't get his way. He will continue to brainwash the stupid into believing it's the Republican's doing but what has happened is his refusal to compromise. If he continues to make sequester cuts to hurt the people he 'rules', just remember it's HIS doing. He could easily make cuts where no one would even notice. There's not that much money to make a difference. If people are so stupid to believe the Republicans are causing this pain---they are dumber than dirt. Does anyone honestly believe oscumma will be forced to stop air traffic because of the cuts he has to make? Anyone with third grade math skills could figure that one out.

No one has tried anything else yet, but I think that competition in education will increase the quality.

After all, we have competition in higher education, so why not in primary and secondary?

I just thought that the Gates foundation to fund kindergarden through 12th grade classes on youtube was a magnificent expenditure for the foundation.

wish they would expand it with college degree studies. A person can take exams for $25 at licensed agencies.

college degrees would have cost cut by 85% at minimum.

global impact for anyone with an internet connection. Free college.

There are a variety of ways that public education is delivered around the world and there are countries in which tax dollars fund a mix of public and private schools.

The issue with choice/competition when it comes to education is that it tends to result in pooling of desireable students from well-supported families in desirable schools. This tends to run counter to the competitive improvement you are looking for. IF the system as a whole is sufficiently responsive to the "market" need, that is when a particular school/method becomes popular it is replicated so as to be more widely available, the pooling tends not to occur or to be a problem.

I don't know that there are excellent examples of this anywhere, however.

I agree, it is a wonderful idea and a beginning in how we can improve academic learning in this country. It's not quite a simple as you say, but it is a starting point. There are so many ways to reduce the costs of education and this is one way to begin. Unfortunately, the government doesn't want to lose control. It is addicted to the money.

So now you know. There is so much waste in the Department of Education and in all facets of public education. We need to get the government out of our lives, especially our bank accounts. There are ways to minimize government involvement and maximize learning. We need to make parents more involved in their children's education which means they MUST ante up.

This sequester should be a wake up call to all to those who are so government dependant. It's ridiculous there has to be an argument about making cuts within our government. Taxpayers WANT to reduce spending and yet the government keeps spending. Taxpayers don't want taxes and yet the government increases taxes.

A 2.7% cut in a budget that has gone up over a trillion dollars since King Soetoro was crowned is not going to kill anybody. In fact, those figures I posted seem to indicate that if we just freeze spending from here on out until tax collections catch up, we will be okay.

But nobody has the guts to do that even.

Makes you ask the question........who has become the biggest threat to the citizens? Government and it's fear mongering? This administration has the freedom to make the cuts where it would not even be noticed. I suspect our scumbag prez will make cuts so people are going to be hurt and blame the Republicans for it. People are stupid enough to fall for it. oscumma is enough of a scumbag to do it. People have to realize the dems are in control. They decide where the cuts are made. Not the republicans. They have only forced the dems to make cuts, thank God! It's not nearly enough but at least they will have to. This sequester is an indication of how stupid and out of control this administration really is.
