I was shocked to read the article regarding "Investor Nightmare'. It is so one sided. Did you all talk to Mr. Ganguli and get his side of the story? I thought that good journalism means unbiased discussion! No doubt newspaper are having so much trouble! Are you trying to raise cash by writing such a 'JUICY' one sided story?
As for the investers, if they are really educated and intelligent, they should have looked into the whole deal more seriously. I guess they wanted to make a fast buck without working, and when things did not go their way, trouble started. Now they are trying to recoup their losses!

Sure sounds like he was scamming to me. There are forged checks all over the place, he was collecting half the rent in cash (?) and the police have a stack of checks a foot high that indicate fraud. And he claims "that's all false"! Yeah right, the cops just make that stuff up. So he took care of his fellow countrymen? Yeah, with other peoples money. You can't have all the evidence the police have if nothing was going on. He will end up just like ol' Bernie, as his wife and children end up like Bernie's wife. I feel badly for them but that's what happens when you live with a scammer. Welcome to America - we catch up to most criminals eventually, even if we don't get the victims money back.

I read the article. It is clear that it has infuriated/hurt many people. What I will like to know whether the claim(s) of individuals printed in the article can be substantiated with facts/documents. I know of one court case (that has not yet been settled) related to the claim(s). Won't it be better if the court-files were consulted and were reported herein to establish what can or cannot be substantiated? I think so. As a result, I strongly believe that such claims should not be printed until the substantiating references are also printed along with them. I hope that a news paper should compile all that before printing what who says about whom. Not doing that may very well produce a DRAMA but does not produce any NEWS that I can learn from. I further hope that Columbus Dispatch has gone through that exercise, will give my request a serious consideration, mention how many court-files were consulted, and summarize (with file numbers) what the files contain. A quick publication containing what I request will be higly desirable.

The victim is my father. Notice that the police didn't make any quotes and the fact is this story was supposed to skew your judgement. My father also has evidence verifying everything he says. When I asked the writer to hold off until after a charge was conducted and if my father was guilty to print the article and if not to not write the story, they said they couldn't do that they didn't want to wait but if they were wrong they'd write another story. The fact is no one cares about the truth you all want to point fingers in a matter you know nothing about.

Sounds to me like another family is out again protecting dear old dumba___ss dad. I know enough Indian people to know that the whole nursing home story is a bunch of cr@p. Sounds to me if you're taking half the rent, that makes you a crook and your dad is one. Sounds like his partners are crooks too and if one of them is a doctor, they should lose their license. They will suspend or pull your medical license for tax fraud, you know. Birds of a feather ........

It is amazing to me that the Columbus Dispatch, which should be an objective source of news events, in good faith can publish an article of this nature, which (A) is dealing with ongoing legal cases and (B) where the dispatch is clearly taking sides and (C) where the article does not seem to present any ACTUAL evidence that is substantiated by some sort of court proceedings or filings.
I have known Somnath Ganguly for a long time and he has been always been an honest, helpful, and kind hearted man.
I agree with the comments above in that the Dispatch should clearly present how and where they recieved this evidence and present facts instead of compiling the opinions of the people who all seem to be on ONE side of this legal case.

Dispatch reporters are professionals and do a good job. I'm sure they gave the crook had ample opportunity to give his side of the story. The fact that you don't like the information that came out is your problem.

As a member of the Bengali community, I feel embarrassed by the type of communication exchange on this site. I feel empathy for the Ganguly family-- I believe that whatever their situation is, unjust or not, it should be handled privately.

So maybe you guys should pay attention to who your defending.
You obviously have him mistaken for someone else. This Raj Chakrabarti is not even close to some of the things you are falsely accusing him of. This is defnitely not the place to be making false accusations about someone, either. You are destroying a man's reputation who does not deserve it. I know him very well and am very offended by your remarks. He is also a very giving person and volunteers a lot of his time to religious and community causes. This is an unfortunate situation that these people involved have found themselves in. There is much more grief and hurt involved than just this article and these comments. I hope that everyone keeps in mind that there are real people (and their families) involved in this. Be kind.

This is really awful. I don't know if the guy is bad or if he did all those bad things. It looks like there are pending lawsuits. Shouldn’t the court decide if he is guilty and punish him as per law? Until then, we should consider him innocent and give him chance to defend himself. If he is really innocent, have we considered how these comments will hurt his wife, daughter and old mother? If this would be done to any of us, how we would feel?

Just my opinion, I don't know any of these people, but it sounds like they're all crooks. The investors were trying to make some fast money as was the promoter. The sad part about this is that Ganguly could have protected himself if he got an attorney to prepare some sort of partnership agreement for him. He probably could have taken 50% of the profits as his fee for setting things up ... but he was too lazy/cheap/stupid to do so.

Both of the names sound familiar to me, I think they hosted the Bangamela 08’. From what I heard they ripped off the general public for the funding and used the budget for the whole fair which was apparently about 500 thousand dollar and used the money for their own personal gain. All the vendors that came for business made absolutely no money, and even couldn’t pay for their own placement there, along with them the artists who came made no money and their corporation COBCA apparently took money from the Ohio’s arts council along with other corporations Nationwide Insurance saying that they needed it to fulfill their mission statement to spread the culture among. Instead they used a very low percent for diversity and the rest was for their own profit (eating out during meetings etc.) and own entertainment. And of course No audits nor ticket prices went to the correct funds and it seems that Bangamela 2008 was nothing more than a means to gain profits. That’s what I have heard at least.

Being an investor is not being greedy. It's working hard, saving money and trying to make better life for you and your family. It's called "capitalism," and until idiots like you became so predominant in our culture, this country admired risk-takers.

Why don't you go back to where you freakin family came from if you don't like the way people in America live!!!! No one for you immigrant point of view. The world changes and I blame the court systems for these issues, not womens lib!! Just because you are male sexist PIG and think women belong in the kitchen barefoot and prego...you think you have the right to say this crap!?! You don't like the way America is then get the friggin heck out and go to some other country JERK!!
You are a fool.

What the poster was pointing out is the rules/way of life our grandparents and great-grandparents, etc. lived by, and that first-generation immigrants largely still live by. You can call them names and denigrate them all you want, but you only show your ignorance by denying the basic truths of responsible finances. Immigrant populations thrive because they are not foolish with their money.

Would you live in the back of a store or restaurant for five or 10 years while you saved to pay CASH for a house? No; you want a fancy apartment and shiny car first, then a 30-year mortgage that will keep you strapped all your adult life.

Did you know that prior to WWII home mortgages were rare, almost unheard of? Did you know that if you did get a mortgage it was usually paid off in five, possibly 10 years? That's because AMERICANS (of all national origins) knew how to work hard and save.

Think how absurd it would sound if you could go back in time and tell the people who lived through WWI, the Great depression and WWII that future generations would mortgage their homes for 30 years, then take SECOND mortgages because they were too irresponsible to save money for what they wanted/need and instead made pledges to pay on little plastic cards. They would think you were on drugs!

You sound like a typical knuckle-dragger moron to me. Please read a book; preferably an American history text. The poster was not insulting you -- but I am.

This story should have been edited better. The Madoff reference was a waste of copy, it confuses the reader and this problem is never easily explained during the intro paragraphs.

My parents paid cash for their first house and they were just normal working stiffs. They did sacrifice, of course, as we lived with my grandparents until I was 5 years old and saved the money to build a new house from scratch. And, yes, we all lived right over the store.

Most non-immigrants don't have the ability to do that. First of all, American families aren't very tight. Everybody wants to move out at 18 have their space. Second of all, how would you do that in this culture? Either the spoiled brat wife or the spoiled husband won't be able to put up with the in-laws (or vice versa)... and how are you going to stay with the inlaws when they've divorced and remarried? And again I mention divorce, because just think of all the economic disruption that causes. Divorce is very rare among immigrants of all stripes.

Anyway, the point is that immigrants are to be admired because they do things the old fashioned way. In fact, Americans could learn a few things from them.

You're right, I am truly sorry for my earlier statement, it was not in a form of malice it was simply a restatment of what I had heard. If I have offended anyone I do want to say I am sorry.

After reading the story/comments, there are a couple points I find.
1. Raj Chakrabarti is a most definitely a crook and a dumb one at that. Generally when there is so much evidence piled up against him it leaves very few outs for his side of the story to actually be true. Law enforcement from the economic crimes division generally don't go out of their way to make fake claims in order to help random citizens. My suggestion to Mr. Chakrabarti would be to plead guilty so as to prevent further financial/emotional ruin for himself and his family; the longer this is dragged out the deeper his ditch is going to get.
2. The Truth or daughter Chakrabarti should prolly stop defending her thief of a dad and perhaps look for a way to make a life after her dad is arrested.

I know this can't be right, cause i knew this Ganguly since I was a child.... Well those are different issues and shouldn't be discussed in an open forum.
I have also been to Columbus in 2008 to attend the Bangamela, that they held. It is quite difficult to judge this matter, cause the truth is only some 10,000 miles away from what it seems as reality. Well now let's just share a few things about the ones who are talking so aloud. This man called Suvankar Sengupta is an ultimate fraud and is like a fox in character. this Suvankar along with his friend Swaraj Chakroborty, who held a prominent position in the Columbus Bengali Assocciation, had treated the invited people in the Bangamela 2008, Columbus very badly.... They didn't pay the remunerations to the invited artists for their show at the Bangamela. Among the prominent artists, we had Bhoomi, one of the leading folk bands from Kolkata. This Suvankar and Swaraj also treated the guests who went there just for the programme in a shameful manner, not paying for any expenses, though they had promised to. It is quite obvious that these two thiefs has stolen all the money from the Bangamela funds. So it is better for them not to slander or blame anyone for something they hadn't committed.
After I went to Columbus, I learned that Swaraj Chakroborty and Somnath Ganguly were partners in business. But this Swaraj was a fraud which Somnath never did understand then. He had emptied Ganguly's account and turned them into a pauper. it is however not possible for a cheat to be a pauper specially if someone steals $1 million, even a five year old knows that. The police should also understand this and are on the wrong tracks. They should look for his partner Swaraj, who actually had taken all the money away.
I would consider myself a true friend of theirs if I can really help them get out of this shit. Well I hope they get out of this quick sand, and the people who are originally involved are put behind bars. All I know that these false allegations defended by the law-suits are originally false in their nature and should be scrutinized. The allegations are being supported by false verdicts by the original culprits.
I would like to say that the police should re-scrutinize the case and read between the lines and re-investigate.
