Forgive me. Since I have never received or paid any, I misunderstood why I always had to answer that question on my taxes.

Well dear, something about the IRS, Obamacare and child support counting as income on the application (though not taxable).

Good to know.
However, I still think there are some major details in error with regard to SL's scenario. Essentially, only one parent can claim the kid as a dependent. Now, it is possible for a single adult, low-income, no dependents to benefit from EIC, but in MY experience, from doing my own kids' taxes, nowhere near the amount she is claiming.
Clearly one or both parents have some income--hence the withholding. But not so much as would make them ineligible for EIC. The original thesis was that marriage would result in a loss of public benefits--untrue on its face, unless one of the partners had too much income. Eligibility is based on income and family size--not marital status.
I stand by my previous suggestion, which was for someone to sit down and work out the math. That's if loss of benefits is the real reason they are avoiding marriage.
There are no major errors in my details. You're build (twisting) a senerio you have no details on.

You don't know the tax code. You're not a CPA.
And neither parent has a full time, cushy municipal job where they can sit on their ass and bait people on topix all day like you do.

Do you have any idea what the employment opportunities have been since 2008 for non-governmental workers? No, you don't.

Better watch out, reader. That public paid pension you've been (sort of) working towards all these years may not be there for you afterall. Take a look at California.

No, you're both mean and condesending. I don't forgive that in anyone. I'd like you better if you were stupid and honest.

My stepson has paid child support plus, beginning before the baby was born. Like his father, he is a very talented and hard working guy.
Well dear, it sounds as if the baby mama is rolling in the dough, thanks to the taxpayers and generous child support!

And I would submit that you know very little about welfare eligibility or benefits.

Probably why you have fallen back on insults.

She's not rolling in dough. She does not get cash assistance or housing. She gets food stamps, daycare and health care and energy assistance. And a HUGE EIC credit. And he pays his child support and visits as often as he can. Talks to them everyday. His only work is in VA. So he has to keep a roof over his head there too. Only a 3 hour drive.

She works hard, I'm not down on her, I'm down on our system. She's only one of millions.

She went to tech college for beautician and graduated. But because of a reading disability, she just cannot pass the state license test. She is given it orally, three times, but she gets too tense and fails.

They have gone together since they were 14. The little girl was born when they were 20. She will be 4 this month and is very smart. Beat myself and her pop-pop at Go Fish and Old Maids twice each today. After we visited the horses, fed the deer, cats, and birds. All in all, she's a lucky little girl.

You had to answer it because you are filing online with something like turbo tax (one of the worse) and the questions pops up automatically. You more than likely were asked if you collected any rental income, etc. also.

Yes, everyone bought that story. Like it would be so hard to track the source of either.

I sympathize. Kos has posted that I have/am, whatever, propositioned him. Koo-koo. Everyone knows I'm after Rowdy.

Submit whatever you want. Doesn't make it fact. I'm quite sure you know more about entitlements then I do.

I've had a busy week, but I will be stepping up the insults if you like. God knows you provide the ammunition.

You know how dupe ends all of his posts with 'woof'

You should try 'moo'

I have filed taxes multiple ways. Turbotax or an accoutant asks the question because it is smething that must be accounted for, just like it asks questions about dependents, health care expenses, charitable donations and the like.

If the child support is adequate, and she seems to be earning something as well, where are all the benefits coming from? The ones she seems to think she would lose if they were married.
