Obama:'Our hearts are broken today'

President Obama has been monitoring events in Connecticut since the morning shootings at an elementary school.

A tearful, emotional President Obama said Friday that the nation has endured too many of the kinds of shootings that took 27 lives Friday in Connecticut -- including 20 children.
"Our hearts are broken today," Obama said at the White House, pausing at times to gather himself and brush back tears.

Obama cited the scenes of other shootings -- a shopping mall in Oregon, a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, a movie theater in Colorado and "a street corner in Chicago" -- and said "these children are our children." While the president did not specifically cite the gun-control issue, he said: "We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."

Fighting back more tears, Obama -- a father of two daughters -- pointed out that most of the victims were "beautiful little kids" from the ages of 5 to 10, and "had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own."

The fallen also included teachers, Obama said, "men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams."
Just before his remarks, Obama ordered flags at federal facilities to be lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims.

Obama said that, like other parents across the country, he and wife Michelle will hug their children tonight, and tell them how much they love them -- "but there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans. And I will do everything in my power as president to help."

I am sure George and his faithful sidekick Karl will be along shortly to politicize and mock President Obama's compassion. I wish they would hurry up and secede like they promised.

What I am most interested in is the background of the shooter. I give about 70% odds he has some J in his background.

Read what your boy said and tell me this wasn't political:

"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."

Gun control is a dead issue. Deal with it.

I heard that. Lanza could be Italian, it could also be Ladino. But Adam?

I don't know, could go either way.

Jewish mother perhaps?

I was wrong the last time, let's see if I hit the jackpot this time around.

Does it seem odd to anyone that the last three shooters were dressed in camoflage? The theatre shooter, the mall shooter, and now the school shooter?is that a coincidence? Please don't correct my spelling-I don't like that.

A shooter at a Connecticut elementary school that left 27 people dead, including 20 children, was identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza.

A law enforcement official in Washington said Lanza, who was killed at the scene, had apparent ties to the school and that one of the guns was a .223-caliber rifle. His mother worked at the school and police were searching a location in Hoboken, New Jersey, where his father lives. Adam's brother, 24-year-old Ryan, is being questioned.

The killings happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City. The town is more than 90 percent white and five percent Latino, according to the U.S. Census.

The shooting is the latest mass violent incident in a year that in recent days saw a deadly mall shooting in Oregon, and months ago a gunman opened fire in a suburban Colorado movie theater that killed about a dozen. Both gunmen are in their 20's. The Oregon shooter killed himself after killing two other people.

_________

The gunman is also dead at the scene, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police confirmed that there was a secondary crime scene at a home in Connecticut, with one adult victim in that home.

The shooter’s mother Nancy Lanza was a teacher at the school where the shooting took place. Officials say the shootings took place in two classrooms. According to CBS News sources, most of the shooting occurred in one classroom – and Nancy Lanza is among the dead.

Two options:

1. Mommy dearest?

2. A momma's boy who wanted to take his mother with him into the afterlife?

You're barking up the wrong tree on this one. The logistics are all wrong ... not likely his mother would have pulled a gun on him, and not likely that elementary school kids would be packing.

Unarmed teachers and staff can't return fire. And of course that is how the anti gun crazies want it

Incredibly shocked and saddened about this. We do need to consider what kinds of policies might make a difference. Personally I lean towards more mental health with increased screenings required for gun purchases. Maybe bans on whatever kinds of weapons can shoot massive rounds at one time without reloading.

But we can't get there if we cannot talk honestly about what helps and what does not.

But for the moment I think the best response is to pray for that community.
