A new poll by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal reveals that public perceptions about race relations in America have taken a devastating hit since the election of Barack Obama. At the beginning of the presidentís first term, 79 percent of whites and 63 percent of blacks had a positive view of American race relations. Those numbers have plummeted to 52 percent and 38 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, 45 percent of whites now consider race relations fairly or very bad, compared with 20 percent in 2009, and the negative views held by black Americans has jumped from 30 percent to 58 percent. Thus, the idea that the election of Barack Obama would usher in a golden age of so-called post-racial relations has exploded. And the president and his administration bear the lionís share of the responsibility for lighting the fuse.

The poll, conducted in mid-July by Hart Research Associations and Public Opinion Strategies, has tracked Americansí attitudes about race since 1994. And despite only a single poll question regarding the Zimmerman trial, which asked whether the outcome increased, decreased, or didnít affect oneís confidence in the legal system, the steepest decline in positive views, and greatest increase in negative views, occurred in the last two years. That the timeframe largely coincides with the Trayvon Martin shooting controversy is likely no coincidence.

I believe it!
Obama should have never made a statement about TM case. They said he was prodded by black community.
He stirred the pot, big time, and signaled the blacks to run with it, making the situation unbearable.....

I don't believe the President is doing anything to "light the fuse"; it's just that certain people are now forced to admit that it's possible for a black man to become President in this country and are forced to confront (unsuccessfully) their feelings about that. This would be why the poll shows worsening public PERCEPTIONS of race relations.
And just how does that explain the responses of BLACKS, dummy?

They're butthurt because we dare criticize a "black" president on his policies and HIS OWN racist words. Tough.

Not when it's you people who act like entitled animals.
Yesterday in Columbus pretty much summed up you people and your pathology as a race.

When black MSNBC hosts are whining about "white supremacy" and an entire political party is driven mad by legalizing 30 million Latins to eliminate the white majority, how can I be expected to not be angry?

Though no longer practicing, Obama is a lawyer. As the CiC and President, I am not at all certain he should have said some of the things he said. Community organizer or community agitator? Think about it: This week, he gave campaign speeches in which he said "they" are after the unions and he was going to fight for the middle class. Apparently he did not notice that the unions have been going after HIM for his Obamacare fiasco!

And exactly who are THEY since his own administration is messing up right and left?

NBC and WSJ are both bull dung. The perception of race relations is different, that's about it. Whites want a different conversation than blacks and that's the biggest problem.

Whenever they say "conversation", it ends up being "lecturing" about "privilege". Never is it about their "irresponsibility".

Completely untrue. Believe it or not, there are mixed communities which work very well because they all share roughly the same morals and values. Perhaps not religion, but morals and values. Thus, the color of the skin or the shape of the eyes doesn't matter. What matters is how you work with your neighbor, and it works quite well.

But that means no loud music late at night (even from the car), no loud parties, no theft, no uncontrolled repeated bursts of anger, watching out for each other, taking care of each other, respecting the adults and their rules, taking care of your property, etc.
