Cancer clinics turn away 1000s of Medicare patients

Cancer clinics around the country are turning away thousands of Medicare patients because of sequester budget cuts, the Washington Post reports.
Oncologists say the reduced funding for Medicare makes it impossible to administer expensive chemotherapy drugs to those patients and remain in business.
As a result, the patients will be forced to seek care in more expensive settings like hospitals, which in some localities may not even have the capacity to treat them, the Post said.
Cancer patients have been hit hard by the sequester because of the way the drugs are covered under Medicare. Medications for seniors generally fall under the optional Medicare Part D private insurance coverage. Because the cancer drugs are administered by doctors, often by infusion, they are paid for by Medicare's Part B, which is subject to the sequester cut, the Post said.

This is what happens when elected representatives pass a bill they haven't bothered to read.
