Downtown residents, developers savor property-tax break from city
Ahmed Mohyeldin and Wafa Abu Ghannam estimate the Downtown property-tax abatement saves them about $5,000 a year on the E. Gay Street condo they recently bought for $400,000.

Property-tax Break Unfair To Other Residents
Friday March 28, 2014 5:07 AM
Columbus Dispatch Letter To The Editor
The Sunday Dispatch article “Serious savings” reported that the city of Columbus bypassed $8.3 million in property taxes to increase the number of people living Downtown.
As a property-owning taxpayer (should I say subsidizer?), I strongly object to this action by the city for the following reasons:
• Those who can afford to live in these Downtown properties can very easily afford to pay the taxes.
• If these residents did pay their property taxes, there would be less need for tax increases.
• It seems that there is a conflict of interest, as Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman does own and reside in a Downtown residence.
I see why the City Council “quietly extended the break just as it was about to expire,” as noted in the article.
