Property-tax Break Unfair To Other Residents

Columbus Dispatch Letter To The Editor

The Sunday Dispatch article “Serious savings” reported that the city of Columbus bypassed $8.3 million in property taxes to increase the number of people living Downtown.

As a property-owning taxpayer (should I say subsidizer?), I strongly object to this action by the city for the following reasons:

• Those who can afford to live in these Downtown properties can very easily afford to pay the taxes.

• If these residents did pay their property taxes, there would be less need for tax increases.

• It seems that there is a conflict of interest, as Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman does own and reside in a Downtown residence.

I see why the City Council “quietly extended the break just as it was about to expire,” as noted in the article.
