Who are these companies and what do they want from me? A voyage into the invisible business that funds the web.

This morning, if you opened your browser and went to NYTimes.com, an amazing thing happened in the milliseconds between your click and when the news about North Korea and James Murdoch appeared on your screen. Data from this single visit was sent to 10 different companies, including Microsoft and Google subsidiaries, a gaggle of traffic-logging sites, and other, smaller ad firms. Nearly instantaneously, these companies can log your visit, place ads tailored for your eyes specifically, and add to the ever-growing online file about you.

You are a 'buyer' a consumer and they or the companies they sell to want to 'sell' you something. The Cousins are in it for money ... any way they can get it from YOU.

It's okay because they are private businesses and not accountable to anyone. If you don't like it, just don't use the "internets".

Not using the internet via a browser will protect your privacy somewhat, but the way of life in America and 'developed' countires (lots of techniques to get data) along with the ability of computers to analyze data means 'they' will still be tracking what you do and when you do it ... for a business or government it is a 'good' practice, you can provide better services and, if you are a business, make money. It is not evil, just taking care of business.
