I think Polk may be part owner of the college. There are currently several students who have filed lawsuits alledgin the college does not provide the education it advertises.

When will the public wake up to what Big Education is doing to our kids. First of all we use taxpayer money to keep the cost of education down and the cost continues to skyrocket. Then we saddle our children with debt, from college tuition, that will keep their purchasing power low. We force kids to take subjects that do not pertain to their field of expertise, which causes the cost to go up. All in the name of giving a bunch of failed businessmen a ton of money and job security. More money for higher education is not the answer it just makes the bureaucracy get larger.

This guy makes twice as much as the presidents of WVU and Marshall. The people of Beckley and the faculty of the university look the other way because of how much $ the university brings into the local economy.

It is a private institution. Who cares what he makes? Look at what the big boys spend on sports - now that's an eye opener. I'm a life-long sports fan too, but it has gotten out of hand. West Virginia should seriously consider requiring that all state institutions give at least 50% of athletic scholorships to in-state kids. Look at the rosters for WVU and Marshall football and basketball - they are 80% to 90% from out-of-state. Our tax dollars are sending Florida kids to college.

You can justify a larger salary if the degree that you confer is worth it. Is a degree from MSU worth more than one from MU, WVU, VT, or UVA? Not even close. There are good people at MSU who do not speak up because they are afraid of the pres who has absolute authority. If he didn't make so much some of the faculty and staff could make more. Or perhaps the tuition wouldn't be so expensive. He doesn't even have an outside board to answer to. Do you think he could get away with this at Washington and Lee, Brown, or Davidson?
What college football coaches make is another issue altogether and is for another thread. This discussion is about the justification of a salary of a local U Pres.

He was notified about a grade I got in college which I appealed the grade the day I recieved it and he did nothing !! He and the college held my term paper for 2 years all the time I refused to pay for the cost of that semester !! Finally they sent my paper to me but he nor the teacher ever changed the " C " grade to an " A "
The class was in Marketing and everything in that paper has materalized in the last 2 years describeing the houseing mess along with credit card defaults the hole USA is experencing now !! This paper was written in 2005.
My thoughts on MSU are negative from personal experience !! If hes paid miniumn wage hes overpaid !!

Thank you for pointing out that it is a private institutional as compared to a state-funded public college.

Reading the article about 300,000 was delayed compensation and performance for longevity.

"About $300,000 of that sum came from a deferred compensation benefits package and a bonus for performance and longevity."

Checking on Mr. Polk, it appears that when he came to the college it was almost bankrupt. If the college wants to reward Mr. Polk for turning the college around and "growing" it - then good for him.

I am a current student at MSU Well now I fully grasp the understannding why tuition is so high. If Dr. Polk is making that kind of money. And Im quite sure many of the Professors and Directors of programs are not making that kind of cash. And they are the backbone of the University. I believe Dr. Polk should be like many other CEO's in the country and forefit his salary for one year and give bonusus to the Professors and give back to the community and cut tution with his salary. Lets see how far he is willing to go for the University. I bet He woud screw that. He definatley has one goal and its not for the college but to see how fat his/her wallet can get.

Your beef is with the board of directors who think Polk is worth the money for what he's done over the past and perhaps his prior experience in Florida where:

"Polk took a one-campus college and over 16 years he turned it into a five-campus institution and one of the larger players in the state."

“That stands out as one of the high points in my career,” he said."

If they offer it to him, then he'd be a fool to turn it down unless he just wanted to retire.

Your choice is to go to another, cheaper college, if you can get in. I think just about everyone gets in to Beckley College.

My beef is not with the board of directors but the idiot individuals that realize this is nothing but politics. So inessence my beef is with the politicians and the democratic party, which likes to spend spend spend. As we can see by the bust display of sen. Byrd and the life like statue of Dr. Polk it all goes back to the good ol boy network.

He protected the teacher that gave me a "C" in a Marketing class and HE HELD HOSTAGE my term Paper for 2 years !! It was sent to Bush, Obama, Powerlunch, and a host of others informing them
of the state of the economy in the USA. That paper was written in 2002 !!

Rick, I've read several of your comments and I'm not surprised you received a C on your term paper rather than the A you demanded. You were the student, the teacher gave you a grade. You can appeal and complain, but you can't "demand" a change just because you think the grade is wrong. You say you withheld payment of your college tuition for two years, and the college in return held your term paper hostage. LOL

You resent Polk's paycheck because of your experience at the college. Didn't you say elsewhere that you'd send that paper to media outlets such as foxnews, msnbc and no one responded? Maybe the paper wasn't that great. Sounds like a "personal problem" to me. Would you like cheese with that whine?

I have known MSU since old Beckley College days when John Saunders was President dureing the Viet Nam Veterans got free college and prior and that school has been more expensive than WVU or Marshall and my experience with MSU has and has been in the past a " total rip off " and they have caused students to be indebted for " Student Loans " for decades !! Saunders lived on Westwood Drive in the 60s. Funny some other posting said he was an AH and noone posted a response but me with the grade in a Marketing Class I got plenty but no big deal because the paper mentioned Valu City looseing millions now the stores they were in are vacant !! Come on Casper The Ghost go BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!
