Certainly a worthwhile project. Sucking the trash out of Detroit would be an improvement. The numbers are puzzling. They had 350 volunteers and only cleaned up 13 houses. Did they work real slowly? Twenty-six people per home seems like overkill. Still, if you have seen the inside of such homes and the lots, it starts to make sense. The trash is piled waste high. Let's hope it went in a dumpster and to the dump. If it was merely moved to the street to await pickup, that may not happen before it gets strewn around.
The effort of bringing folks together for a worthwhile cause can lead to other successful projects as the city climbs out of the cellar.

It will have to an ongoing effort because the volunteers are dealing with filth and trash thrown there by people who won't pick up after themselves, are used to wallowing in it, and have gotten used to living like that until "someone" comes again to pick up after them.

All true, but another feature is that Detroit Public Works does not function efficiently. Stuff sits on the street until it moves on its own. In the burbs the trash disappears on trash day. End of story. The mindset in Detroit is to take trash to an empty lot or at least someone else's lot.
Yet and still, there is a cultural difference when you cross over into Detroit. You begin to see paper and trash everywhere. These are small items of daily living, not the stuff of weekly trash pickup. People just don't value peace and order there.

Yep,and sit on the porch and bitch about the trash in THEIR yard that THEY put there not being picked up. If they want to live like cockroaches and act like cockroaches, then they must be cockroaches.
